baresip Softphone Setup with Voyced (Linux and macOS)
baresip is a free, open-source SIP softphone for Linux and macOS.
With baresip, you use your Voyced telephone number to make and receive calls directly from your computer.
Unlike traditional softphones, baresip mainly uses a command-line interface. You enter telephone numbers and control calls by typing commands.
baresip is lightweight, supports multiple SIP accounts and offers advanced audio and telephone features.
This guide explains how to install baresip, connect your Voyced account and start making calls.
1. What you need
Before starting, prepare:
-
A Linux computer or Mac.
-
A working internet connection.
-
Your Voyced DID (telephone number or SIP username).
-
Your Voyced Service Password.
-
A microphone and speakers, preferably a headset.
-
Basic familiarity with Terminal.
About baresip
baresip is available free of charge under the BSD 3-Clause licence.
Official project:
https://github.com/baresip/baresip
Official documentation:
https://github.com/baresip/baresip/wiki
The current stable release at the time of writing is version 4.12.0, published on 30 September 2026.
Your Linux distribution might offer an older packaged version.
baresip is modular. This means features such as codecs, audio devices and call controls are provided by components called modules.
Most users only need a few of these features to make normal telephone calls through Voyced.
2. Install baresip on Ubuntu or Debian
Step 1. Open Terminal
Open Terminal from your applications menu.
On many Linux desktops, you may also use Ctrl + Alt + T.
Step 2. Update the package list
Enter:
sudo apt update
Press Enter.
Enter your system password if requested.
Step 3. Install baresip
Run:
sudo apt install baresip
Confirm the installation when prompted.
Step 4. Start baresip
Enter:
baresip
On the first run, baresip normally creates its configuration files in:
~/.baresip/
These files hold your SIP account settings, audio preferences and other options.
If baresip reports that no accounts are configured, this is expected during the first setup.
Quit the application by typing:
/quit
You are now ready to add your Voyced account.
3. Install baresip on Fedora and other Linux distributions
Fedora
Open Terminal and run:
sudo dnf install baresip
Once installed, start the application:
baresip
Arch Linux
Use:
sudo pacman -S baresip
Start baresip:
baresip
Other Linux distributions
Check whether baresip is available through your distribution's package manager.
If your distribution does not provide a suitable package, consult the official project's installation documentation.
For most users, installing the available distribution package is easier than compiling baresip from source.
The Voyced account configuration remains the same.
4. Install baresip on macOS
The easiest installation method on macOS is Homebrew.
Homebrew is a package manager that installs applications and tools using Terminal.
Step 1. Check Homebrew
Open Terminal and enter:
brew --version
If Homebrew is installed, the command displays its version.
If Homebrew is not installed, visit:
Follow the official installation instructions.
Step 2. Install baresip
Enter:
brew install baresip
Homebrew downloads baresip and its required dependencies.
Step 3. Start baresip
Enter:
baresip
On the first run, baresip normally creates its configuration directory:
~/.baresip/
This directory is the same on macOS and Linux.
Step 4. Allow microphone access
If macOS requests permission to access your microphone, allow access for the relevant application.
Depending on your setup, this may appear as a permission request for Terminal or your chosen terminal application.
If audio does not work, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
Once baresip starts successfully, type:
/quit
We will now configure your Voyced telephone account.
5. Find your Voyced SIP account details
Before configuring baresip, locate your Voyced telephone account credentials.
-
Log in to your Voyced Hosted IPPBX.
-
Open Cloud PBX / IP Centrex > Phone Lines.
-
Find the telephone number you want to connect.
-
Select the wrench icon beside the number.
-
Copy the DID displayed for your account.
-
Open My Profile > Settings to find your Service Password.
Your DID serves as your SIP username.
Your Service Password is different from your Hosted IPPBX web login password.
You need both values for the next step.
6. Configure your Voyced SIP account
baresip stores telephone accounts in a file named:
accounts
The default location is:
~/.baresip/accounts
Each SIP account occupies one line in this file.
Step 1. Open the account file
On Linux or macOS, open Terminal.
Enter:
nano ~/.baresip/accounts
This opens the account file using the Nano text editor.
If you already have an account configured, preserve its existing line.
Step 2. Add your Voyced account
Add the following line:
<sip:YOUR-DID@sip.voyced.eu;transport=udp>;auth_user=YOUR-DID;auth_pass=YOUR-SERVICE-PASSWORD;dtmfmode=rtpevent;mwi=yes
Replace:
-
YOUR-DID with your Voyced SIP username.
-
YOUR-SERVICE-PASSWORD with your Voyced Service Password.
For example, if your username were 442035001234, the beginning of the account line would be:
<sip:442035001234@sip.voyced.eu;transport=udp>
Your actual account line must also include the authentication settings and Service Password from the complete example.
What these settings mean
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| sip@sip.voyced.eu | Your Voyced SIP identity |
| transport=udp | Uses UDP for SIP communication |
| auth_user | Your Voyced authentication username |
| auth_pass | Your Voyced Service Password |
| dtmfmode=rtpevent | Sends telephone keypad tones using RTP events |
| mwi=yes | Enables voicemail message-waiting support |
The username and authentication username should normally be identical.
Do not include a leading + in your DID unless Voyced explicitly provided your SIP username in that form.
If your Service Password contains special configuration characters, consult the baresip account-file documentation for the required quoting format.
Step 3. Save your changes
In Nano:
-
Press Ctrl + O to save.
-
Press Enter to confirm the filename.
-
Press Ctrl + X to exit.
Step 4. Protect your account file
The account file contains your Service Password.
To restrict access to your own user account, run:
chmod 600 ~/.baresip/accounts
This limits file access to your current operating-system user.
Your Voyced SIP account is now configured.
7. Start baresip and register with Voyced
Step 1. Launch the application
Open Terminal and enter:
baresip
baresip reads the configuration and attempts to register your Voyced account.
Step 2. Check registration
A successful registration should produce a SIP response such as:
200 OK
This means the server accepted the registration.
Step 3. Check account status
At the baresip command prompt, enter:
/reginfo
This displays SIP registration information.
You may also press:
r
to access the registration information through the short command.
Step 4. Check the active account
Enter:
/uastat
This displays the current SIP user-agent status.
A correctly configured account should show your Voyced SIP identity and successful registration.
If registration fails, check the username, Service Password and server details before changing advanced settings.
8. Voyced SIP server settings
Voyced supports several methods for reaching its SIP servers.
| Connection method | Server | Port |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred DNS NAPTR | sip.voyced.eu | 0 |
| Alternative DNS SRV | sip.voyced.eu | 5060 |
| Traditional SIP | sip.voyced.eu | 5060 |
| Secondary SIP server | sipnl.voyced.eu | 5060 |
baresip supports DNS NAPTR and SRV lookups.
For the standard configuration in this guide, the account uses:
-
Server: sip.voyced.eu
-
Transport: UDP
-
Standard SIP port: 5060
The NAPTR port value of 0 is associated with Voyced's DNS discovery configuration. It is not the standard UDP destination port.
Secondary SIP server
Voyced also provides:
sipnl.voyced.eu
This alternative server is available for different connection arrangements.
Keep the primary server in your account file for normal operation.
If Voyced Support asks you to test the secondary server, use the alternative hostname in your SIP server configuration while retaining the correct SIP authentication identity.
9. Configure general SIP settings
baresip stores its general settings in:
~/.baresip/config
This is separate from the accounts file.
Step 1. Open the configuration file
First, stop baresip if it is running:
/quit
Then open the file:
nano ~/.baresip/config
Step 2. Check the SIP transport
Find the SIP configuration section.
Look for:
#sip_trans_def udp
The # indicates that the setting is commented out.
For the standard Voyced connection, UDP is the preferred transport.
You may explicitly set:
sip_trans_def udp
The account configuration from Section 6 already requests UDP, so this additional setting is not normally necessary.
Step 3. Check the modules
baresip uses modules for its user interface, audio devices and codecs.
A normal installation should include the standard input/output module and the G.711 audio codec.
Look for entries such as:
module stdio.so
module g711.so
module_app account.so
module_app menu.so
These are important for normal telephone operation.
The first provides the console interface.
The second provides G.711 audio support.
The account module loads your SIP accounts.
The menu module provides telephone call commands.
Leave other modules unchanged unless you need a specific feature.
Step 4. Save
If you made changes:
-
Press Ctrl + O.
-
Press Enter.
-
Press Ctrl + X.
Restart baresip:
baresip
10. Configure audio on Linux
baresip supports several Linux audio systems.
These include:
-
ALSA.
-
PulseAudio.
-
PipeWire, where the module is available.
-
JACK.
The available modules depend on your installation.
Check the current audio settings
Open:
nano ~/.baresip/config
Find the Audio section.
A typical ALSA configuration is:
audio_player alsa,default
audio_source alsa,default
audio_alert alsa,default
These settings control:
-
Audio playback during calls.
-
Microphone recording.
-
Incoming-call notification sounds.
Using PulseAudio
If your installation includes the PulseAudio module, you may use:
audio_player pulse,default
audio_source pulse,default
audio_alert pulse,default
Make sure the corresponding pulse.so module is available and loaded.
On systems using PipeWire, the PulseAudio compatibility service is often available, so this configuration may also work.
Selecting your headset
Once baresip starts, use your Linux desktop's sound settings to select the correct microphone and speakers.
If baresip uses the system's default audio device, selecting your headset as the default device is normally sufficient.
If audio does not work, confirm the correct baresip audio module is installed and loaded.
11. Configure audio on macOS
baresip supports macOS audio through its Core Audio module.
A typical configuration uses:
audio_player coreaudio,default
audio_source coreaudio,default
audio_alert coreaudio,default
These settings use your Mac's default audio devices.
Check the audio module
In the configuration file, find the Audio Driver Modules section.
Confirm the appropriate Core Audio module is available, such as:
module coreaudio.so
Module availability depends on your baresip build.
Do not add modules that are not included in your installation.
Select your microphone and speakers
-
Open System Settings on your Mac.
-
Select Sound.
-
Choose your preferred output device.
-
Select your microphone as the input device.
-
Adjust the volume.
Restart baresip if it does not recognise your newly selected audio device.
Microphone permissions
If the other person cannot hear you, check microphone permission for your terminal application under Privacy & Security.
For regular telephone calls, a USB or Bluetooth headset is a convenient choice.
12. Configure audio codecs
Audio codecs determine how baresip sends and receives voice.
The available codecs depend on the modules included with your installation.
For Voyced, these codecs are relevant:
| Codec | Recommended use |
|---|---|
| PCMU (G.711 u-law) | Standard telephone audio |
| PCMA (G.711 A-law) | Standard telephone audio |
| G.722 | HD audio where supported |
| Opus | Higher-quality audio on compatible routes |
G.711 provides broad compatibility for normal telephone calls.
Check the codec modules
Open:
nano ~/.baresip/config
Find the Audio Codec Modules section.
For standard telephone calls, make sure G.711 is enabled:
module g711.so
Other codecs, such as Opus or G.722, may be enabled when available.
Restrict your Voyced account to G.711
If you encounter codec compatibility problems, you may restrict the codecs offered by your account.
Edit:
nano ~/.baresip/accounts
Add this parameter to your Voyced account line:
;audio_codecs=pcmu,pcma
For example, the relevant end of your account line would include:
;dtmfmode=rtpevent;mwi=yes;audio_codecs=pcmu,pcma
Save the file and restart baresip.
This tells baresip to offer PCMU and PCMA for the account.
For most users, keeping the default available codecs is suitable when calls work correctly.
13. Make your first outgoing call
baresip provides both short and full commands.
For this guide, we will use the full commands because they are easier to recognise.
Step 1. Start baresip
Open Terminal:
baresip
Confirm your Voyced account is registered.
Step 2. Enter the dial command
At the baresip command prompt, enter:
/dial sip:00442035000202@sip.voyced.eu
This example calls Voyced's published United Kingdom telephone number.
The important parts are:
-
/dialstarts an outgoing telephone call. -
00442035000202is the number being dialled. -
@sip.voyced.euidentifies the SIP domain.
Step 3. Make another call
Replace the destination number with the telephone number you want to call.
Use this format:
/dial sip:TELEPHONE-NUMBER@sip.voyced.eu
Press Enter.
baresip attempts to establish the call using your registered Voyced account.
Step 4. End the call
Enter:
/hangup
Alternatively, press:
b
while baresip is accepting short commands.
The call ends.
14. Making international calls
Voyced uses the same international dialling format across its devices.
Always dial:
00 + Country Code + Telephone Number
For example, the international telephone number:
00442035000202
has:
-
00as the international access prefix. -
44as the United Kingdom country code. -
2035000202as the remaining telephone number.
Using baresip
To call this number:
/dial sip:00442035000202@sip.voyced.eu
Do not replace the initial 00 with a plus sign.
Contacts stored with a plus sign
Some contact applications use telephone numbers beginning with +.
For example:
+442035000202
Before calling through Voyced, use:
00442035000202
baresip does not provide a standard graphical number rewriting setting.
For the simplest setup, enter the 00 format directly.
If you integrate baresip with other software, make sure the final dialled number follows Voyced's 00 format.
15. Receive incoming calls
When someone calls your Voyced telephone number, baresip displays information about the incoming call.
Your microphone and speakers must be available, and the account must remain registered.
Answer the call
Enter:
/accept
Or press:
a
The call is answered.
Reject or end a call
Use:
/hangup
Important for incoming calls
baresip needs to remain running to receive calls.
Closing Terminal or quitting baresip ends the SIP registration.
If you want to receive calls throughout your working day, leave baresip running in an active terminal session.
You may switch to other applications while baresip continues running.
16. Voicemail
Your Voyced voicemail access number is:
1233
Listen to voicemail
Start baresip and confirm your account is registered.
Enter:
/dial sip:1233@sip.voyced.eu
Press Enter.
Follow the spoken instructions.
Enter voicemail menu selections
During an active call, baresip supports DTMF telephone keypad tones.
Press the number requested by the voicemail system.
For example, if the system asks you to press 1, enter:
1
baresip sends the DTMF event.
The account configuration in this guide uses:
dtmfmode=rtpevent
This sends DTMF using RTP telephone events.
Voicemail notifications
baresip supports Message Waiting Indication (MWI).
The account configuration includes:
mwi=yes
MWI notifications require the appropriate application module and support from your Voyced account.
If notifications are unavailable, dial 1233 directly to check voicemail.
17. Caller ID settings
Caller ID is the telephone number displayed to the person receiving your call.
By default, Voyced uses the DID assigned to your SIP account.
The SIP identity configured in baresip identifies your telephone account.
Changing the display name or SIP identity does not automatically change your authorised outbound Caller ID.
Display another telephone number
For example, you might want outgoing calls from your direct number to display your company's main telephone number.
To request this:
-
Log in to your Voyced client area.
-
Open a sales support ticket.
-
Use the subject: Outbound Caller ID adjustment.
-
Provide the Voyced DID you are calling from.
-
Provide the telephone number you want displayed.
Voyced will review the request.
Numbers outside your Voyced account require additional verification and proof of ownership.
Voyced Internal DIDs and extension numbers must not be used as public outbound Caller ID numbers.
18. Using multiple Voyced accounts
baresip supports multiple SIP accounts.
Each account is stored on a separate line in the accounts file.
Add another Voyced number
Open:
nano ~/.baresip/accounts
Add another account line using its own DID and Service Password.
For example:
<sip:FIRST-DID@sip.voyced.eu;transport=udp>;auth_user=FIRST-DID;auth_pass=FIRST-PASSWORD
<sip:SECOND-DID@sip.voyced.eu;transport=udp>;auth_user=SECOND-DID;auth_pass=SECOND-PASSWORD
Replace the example values with the correct credentials for each Voyced account.
Save the file.
Restart baresip.
Check the accounts
At the baresip prompt, enter:
/uastat
This displays information about the configured SIP user agents.
Select the outgoing account
baresip supports selecting between configured SIP user agents.
Use the application command help:
/help
The short command for switching user agents is the Space key.
Select the intended account before making your call.
Each Voyced account uses its own authorised Caller ID unless another arrangement has been approved.
Multiple simultaneous calls
baresip supports multiple SIP accounts and active calls.
The actual number of external calls available depends on the call capacity assigned to your Voyced service.
19. Call handling features
baresip provides several telephone functions through its interactive commands.
Mute your microphone
During an active call, enter:
/mute
This toggles microphone mute.
You may also press:
m
Put a call on hold
During an active call, press:
x
The current call is placed on hold.
Resume a held call
Press:
X
The call resumes.
The uppercase X is important because baresip uses different commands for holding and resuming.
Call transfer
baresip supports SIP call transfer.
During an active call:
-
Press
tto start the transfer command. -
Enter the destination SIP address when requested.
-
Confirm the transfer.
For example, the destination may follow this format:
sip:00442035000202@sip.voyced.eu
baresip uses SIP REFER for supported call transfers.
The receiving telephone service must support the required transfer signalling.
Call waiting
baresip supports multiple calls and call waiting.
When another call arrives, the application displays the incoming call.
Use:
/listcalls
to view active calls.
The number of external calls available depends on your Voyced account.
Conferences
baresip offers conferencing features through supported modules.
The available conference functions depend on which modules are included in your build and configuration.
For ordinary customer calls, you do not need to enable additional conferencing modules.
If you require regular conferences with several outside telephone numbers, use suitable features in your Voyced Hosted IPPBX.
Call recording
baresip supports call recording through optional audio modules.
Recording availability and storage behaviour depend on the installed modules.
For a standard Voyced installation, call recording is not required.
If you use this feature, follow the applicable privacy and consent requirements.

21. Troubleshooting
baresip does not register
Check the account configuration:
nano ~/.baresip/accounts
Confirm the following:
| Setting | Required value |
|---|---|
| SIP domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| SIP username | Your Voyced DID |
| Authentication username | Your Voyced DID |
| Password | Your Service Password |
| Transport | UDP |
| Registration | Enabled |
Restart baresip after correcting the settings.
Authentication failed
Check your DID and Service Password.
Do not use your Hosted IPPBX website login password.
Make sure the account line uses the correct auth_user and auth_pass parameters.
Registration timeout
Check your internet connection.
Confirm the SIP domain is spelled correctly.
Make sure your computer or network permits the required SIP traffic.
For the standard connection, Voyced uses UDP port 5060.
If the issue continues, test another internet connection.
baresip starts but does not show an account
Check that the accounts file contains a valid SIP account entry.
Confirm the entry is not commented out.
Make sure the account line is complete and has no unwanted line breaks.
Check that the account module is loaded.
Calls fail immediately
Confirm successful SIP registration.
Check the destination number.
International calls must begin with 00.
Verify sufficient call credit is available and the destination is permitted.
Incoming calls do not ring
Confirm:
-
baresip is running.
-
The Voyced SIP account is registered.
-
Your audio output device works.
-
The correct account is active.
-
Your Voyced number is not forwarding all calls elsewhere.
If several devices use the same DID, test a single device to help identify registration conflicts.
No audio or one-way audio
Check your microphone and speakers.
Confirm the correct audio driver module is loaded.
Make sure G.711 is enabled.
Try another internet connection.
If the call connects but audio fails, contact Voyced Support with details of an affected call.
Audio module fails to load
Check the current configuration:
nano ~/.baresip/config
Review the Audio Driver Modules section.
Make sure the module named in your audio settings exists in your installation.
For example, do not select Core Audio on Linux or ALSA on macOS.
Use the audio backend supported by your system.
Poor audio quality
Check internet stability.
Try a wired connection or a stronger Wi-Fi signal.
Use a suitable headset.
Start with PCMU and PCMA for codec compatibility.
Voicemail keypad does not respond
Check the account's DTMF mode:
dtmfmode=rtpevent
Make sure the required DTMF support is available.
If voicemail still does not respond, contact Voyced Support with an example call.
Wrong Caller ID
Check which Voyced account placed the call.
Changing the SIP display name does not override the authorised outbound telephone number.
Contact Voyced Support if a different Caller ID is required.
baresip stops receiving calls
Check whether baresip is still running.
If the terminal session closes, the application also stops unless separately managed.
Restart baresip and confirm registration.
If the application remains open but stops registering, check your internet connection and registration status.
Collect diagnostic information
At the baresip prompt, enter:
/sipstat
or:
/netstat
For call details:
/callstat
These commands help identify SIP and network problems.
If Voyced Support requests further information, provide the date, time, destination and approximate duration of an affected call.
Do not share your Service Password.
22. Test your Voyced connection
Once baresip registers successfully, perform the following tests.
Outgoing calls
-
Confirm registration using
/reginfo. -
Dial another telephone number.
-
Confirm the call connects.
-
Check audio in both directions.
