Twinkle is available through the package repositories of several Linux distributions.
The latest upstream version at the time of writing is 1.11.0, released in September 2026.
Your Linux distribution might supply an earlier version. For example, Ubuntu 26.04 and Debian 13 provide version 1.10.3.
The main SIP settings and calling features described in this guide also apply to those versions.
Twinkle is free and open source, licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later.
2. Install Twinkle on Ubuntu or Debian
Twinkle is available from the standard software repositories of Ubuntu and Debian.
Step 1. Open Terminal
Open your Linux terminal using the application menu or the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + T.
Step 2. Update the package list
Enter:
sudo apt update
Press Enter.
Enter your Linux account password if requested.
Step 3. Install Twinkle
Run:
sudo apt install twinkle
If Ubuntu reports that the package is unavailable, enable the Universe repository:
sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
sudo apt install twinkle
The Universe repository option applies to Ubuntu. Debian uses its own repository configuration.
Step 4. Start Twinkle
Open your applications menu and search for Twinkle.
Alternatively, launch the application from Terminal:
twinkle
The graphical Twinkle application opens.
For everyday use, start Twinkle from your applications menu.
3. Install Twinkle on Fedora
Twinkle is also available through Fedora's package repositories.
Step 1. Open Terminal

Enter:
sudo dnf install twinkle
Confirm the installation when prompted.
Fedora supplies its own packaged Twinkle version, which may differ from the latest upstream release.
Step 3. Launch Twinkle
Open your applications menu and search for Twinkle.
Alternatively, enter:
twinkle
Once Twinkle starts, you are ready to configure your Voyced account.
Other Linux distributions
For other supported Linux distributions, check your package manager or the official project repository.
The setup instructions below apply to the graphical Twinkle application.
4. Find your Voyced account details
You need your Voyced SIP credentials to connect Twinkle.
-
Log in to your Voyced Hosted IPPBX.
-
Open Cloud PBX / IP Centrex > Phone Lines.
-
Find the telephone number you want to use.
-
Select the wrench icon beside the number.
-
Copy the DID displayed for your telephone account.
-
Open My Profile > Settings and find your Service Password.
Your Voyced DID serves as the SIP username.
Your Service Password is different from your Hosted IPPBX website login password.
Keep both details ready for the next steps.
5. Configure your Voyced SIP account
Twinkle uses User Profiles to store telephone account settings.
Each profile contains the SIP username, password, domain, registration settings and other options for one telephone account.
Step 1. Create a new user profile
When you start Twinkle for the first time, the profile setup window normally opens automatically.
If Twinkle already contains another account:
-
Open Twinkle.
-
Select File > Change User.
-
Choose the option to add or create a new profile.
-
Give your new profile a name, such as Voyced.
-
Open the profile editor.
Depending on your version, Twinkle offers either a setup wizard or the full profile editor.
Both methods use the same SIP account details.
Step 2. Enter your SIP account information
In the profile editor, select User.
Find the SIP Account section.
Enter the following:
| Twinkle field | Voyced setting |
|---|---|
| Your Name | Your name or company name |
| User Name | Your Voyced DID |
| Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| Organisation | Optional |
The User Name field must contain your Voyced DID exactly as shown in your Hosted IPPBX.
For example, if your DID is 442035001234, enter:
442035001234
Do not add a leading plus sign.
The resulting SIP identity follows this format:
sip:442035001234@sip.voyced.eu
Step 3. Configure SIP authentication
In the same User section, find SIP Authentication.
Enter:
| Field | Voyced setting |
|---|---|
| Realm | Leave empty |
| Authentication Name | Your Voyced DID |
| Password | Your Voyced Service Password |
Twinkle supports an empty authentication realm.
When Realm is empty, Twinkle uses the supplied authentication name and password for the server's authentication challenge.
This is suitable for the standard Voyced setup.
The Authentication Name should normally match the User Name.
Step 4. Configure the SIP server
Select SIP Server from the profile editor's left-hand menu.
Configure the following:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| Registrar | Default, or sip.voyced.eu if explicitly required |
| Use Outbound Proxy | Disabled |
| Register at Startup | Enabled |
| Registration Expiry | Default |
Twinkle normally finds the registration server using the Domain entered in your profile.
You do not need a separate outbound proxy for the standard Voyced connection.
Enable Register at Startup so Twinkle registers your account automatically.
Step 5. Save your profile
-
Review your SIP account and authentication details.
-
Select OK to save.
-
Activate the Voyced user profile.
-
Allow Twinkle to register with the Voyced SIP server.
Once registration succeeds, the application should display the active profile and its registered status.
You are now ready to make a test call.
6. Configure the SIP connection
Voyced supports several SIP connection methods.
Recommended server settings
| Connection method | Server | Port |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred DNS NAPTR | sip.voyced.eu | 0 |
| Alternative DNS SRV | sip.voyced.eu | 5060 |
| Traditional SIP | sip.voyced.eu | 5060 |
| Secondary server | sipnl.voyced.eu | 5060 |
Twinkle supports DNS SRV lookups.
For most connections, use:
-
SIP domain: sip.voyced.eu
-
Transport: UDP
-
Standard server port: 5060
Twinkle does not provide a separate DNS NAPTR selector in its normal profile editor.
The NAPTR port value of 0 belongs to Voyced's DNS discovery settings. Do not enter 0 as a traditional UDP SIP port.
Configure the transport
-
Open your Voyced User Profile.
-
Select Transport/NAT.
-
Find the SIP transport settings.
-
Use UDP.
-
Leave the local SIP port at its default unless another application creates a conflict.
-
Save.
The local SIP port is separate from the remote Voyced server port.
For normal use, there is no need to alter the application's default local port.
Secondary SIP server
Voyced also provides:
sipnl.voyced.eu
This address is available for alternative connection arrangements.
For normal use, keep sip.voyced.eu as your SIP domain and registration destination.
If you experience server connection problems, contact Voyced Support before changing additional registration settings.
7. Configure NAT and network settings
Many computers connect to the internet through a router.
This means your Linux computer may use a private network address while your router uses a public address.
Twinkle offers several options for handling these connections.
Standard Voyced configuration
-
Open Edit > User Profile.
-
Select your Voyced profile.
-
Open Transport/NAT.
-
Leave STUN disabled.
-
Leave any manually configured public IP address empty.
-
Keep the remaining network settings at their defaults.
-
Save.
For a normal connection, do not start by changing router settings or creating manual port forwarding rules.
If your account registers but calls have audio problems, first test using another internet connection.
8. Configure audio devices
Twinkle supports the audio systems available on your Linux installation.
Depending on the distribution and application build, audio device options may include ALSA and other supported interfaces.
Select your microphone and speakers
-
Open Twinkle.
-
Select Edit > System Settings.
-
Find the Audio or Sound settings.
-
Select your preferred microphone.
-
Select your speaker or headset.
-
Set the ringing device.
-
Save your changes.
Test the audio
-
Make a test call.
-
Check whether you hear the other person.
-
Confirm the other person hears you.
-
Adjust the microphone and speaker volumes if needed.
For everyday business calls, a headset helps reduce echo and background noise.
No microphone or speaker listed?
Check your Linux desktop's sound settings.
Make sure your device is recognised and not muted.
If Twinkle uses ALSA directly, confirm your selected device is available through ALSA.
The available audio backends depend on your distribution's Twinkle package.
9. Audio codecs and call quality
Twinkle supports several audio codecs.
The exact selection depends on how your Linux distribution built the application.
For Voyced, the following codecs are relevant:
| Codec | Recommended use |
|---|---|
| G.711 u-law (PCMU) | Standard telephone audio |
| G.711 A-law (PCMA) | Standard telephone audio |
| G.726 | Optional, where supported |
| G.729A | Optional, when included in the build |
| GSM | Optional |
| Speex | Optional, when available |
| iLBC | Optional, when available |
Twinkle provides standard G.711 codecs.
Some optional codecs require additional libraries at build time.
Configure audio codecs
-
Open Edit > User Profile.
-
Select your Voyced profile.
-
Open RTP Audio.
-
Find the available and active codec lists.
-
Enable G.711 u-law and G.711 A-law.
-
Move these codecs higher in the priority list.
-
Save.
For a standard Voyced connection, start with G.711 u-law and A-law.
If calls work correctly, there is no need to change the codec configuration.
DTMF telephone keypad tones
DTMF allows you to press numbers during a call.
This is needed for voicemail and automated telephone menus.
Twinkle supports DTMF methods including RFC 2833, SIP INFO and in-band tones.
For the initial setup:
-
Open Edit > User Profile.
-
Select RTP Audio.
-
Find the DTMF transport setting.
-
Select RFC 2833 where available.
-
Save.
RFC 2833 is also commonly referred to by the newer RFC 4733 specification.
If a particular telephone menu fails to recognise your key presses, contact Voyced Support before changing other settings.
10. Making and receiving calls
Make an outgoing call
-
Open Twinkle.
-
Confirm your Voyced profile is registered.
-
Enter the telephone number in the address or dial field.
-
Select Dial or Call.
-
Wait for the other person to answer.
Twinkle completes the SIP address using your configured domain.
For example, entering a telephone number tells Twinkle to place the call through your selected SIP account.
Receive an incoming call
When someone calls your Voyced telephone number:
-
Twinkle displays an incoming call alert.
-
Select Answer to accept.
-
Speak using your selected microphone and speakers.
-
Use the hang-up control to end the call.
Twinkle must remain running and registered to receive incoming calls.
You may minimise the application to the system tray while working.
Reject an incoming call
Select Reject or the available decline control.
Mute your microphone
During an active call, select Mute.
Select the control again to resume speaking.
11. Making international calls
Voyced uses one international dialling format across your devices.
Always dial:
00 + Country Code + Telephone Number
For example, to call Voyced in the United Kingdom:
00442035000202
Use this format regardless of your location.
Contacts saved with a plus sign
Some address books store international telephone numbers beginning with +.
For example:
+442035000202
For Voyced, the dialled number must be:
00442035000202
Twinkle supports user-defined number conversion rules.
These allow telephone numbers to be modified before calling.
Number conversion
To review the available options:
-
Open Edit > User Profile.
-
Select your Voyced profile.
-
Open Address Format.
-
Find the number conversion settings.
-
Add a conversion rule if required by your contact format.
-
Save.
-
Test the number before everyday use.
The intended conversion replaces a leading + with 00 and leaves correctly formatted numbers unchanged.
For the simplest setup, store international contacts directly using the 00 prefix.
12. Voicemail
Your Voyced voicemail access number is:
1233
Listen to voicemail
-
Open Twinkle.
-
Select your Voyced SIP profile.
-
Enter
1233in the dial field. -
Start the call.
-
Follow the spoken instructions.
You will reach the voicemail service associated with your Voyced account.
Configure voicemail speed dial
Twinkle supports voicemail speed dial settings.
To configure them:
-
Open Edit > User Profile.
-
Select Voice Mail.
-
Find the voicemail server or voicemail access number field.
-
Enter
1233where the application accepts a dialled voicemail number. -
Save.
If your version does not provide a suitable field, dial 1233 directly.
Voicemail notifications
Twinkle supports Message Waiting Indication, also called MWI.
Where the SIP service supplies the required notifications, Twinkle displays a voicemail waiting indicator.
You do not need a notification to access your messages.
Dialling 1233 is the direct method.
13. Caller ID settings
Caller ID is the telephone number shown to the person receiving your call.
By default, Voyced displays the DID assigned to your SIP account.
The Your Name field in Twinkle provides a display name for SIP signalling.
Changing this field does not automatically change your authorised outbound telephone number.
Display another telephone number
For example, you might want outgoing calls from your direct line to display your company's main telephone number.
To request this:
-
Log in to your Voyced client area.
-
Open a sales support ticket.
-
Use the subject: Outbound Caller ID adjustment.
-
Provide the Voyced DID you are calling from.
-
Provide the number you want displayed.
Voyced will review your request.
Telephone numbers outside your Voyced account require additional verification and proof of ownership.
Voyced Internal DIDs and extension numbers must not be used as public outbound Caller ID numbers.
14. Using multiple Voyced accounts
Twinkle supports multiple SIP user profiles.
For example, you might use:
-
Your main business number.
-
Your direct office telephone number.
-
Another number for a separate business.
-
A second international business number.
Add another profile
-
Open Twinkle.
-
Select File > Change User.
-
Choose the option to create a new profile.
-
Enter a profile name.
-
Enter the additional Voyced DID.
-
Enter its Service Password.
-
Set the domain to
sip.voyced.eu. -
Enable registration.
-
Save.
Multiple active accounts
Twinkle supports multiple active user identities.
This means more than one SIP account may be registered at the same time.
The available registration behaviour depends on the profiles you have activated.
When placing an outgoing call, select the correct account.
Each account uses its own SIP credentials and authorised Caller ID.
Simultaneous calls
Twinkle provides two call appearances, or lines.
This supports features such as call waiting, call hold and three-way conferences.
The number of external calls you are allowed to make simultaneously depends on your Voyced account's available call capacity.
15. Call handling features
Twinkle provides several useful telephone features.
Call hold
During an active call:
-
Select Hold.
-
The current call is placed on hold.
-
Select Retrieve or Resume to continue.
Call waiting
Twinkle supports a second incoming call while another call is active.
When a second call arrives, you may answer, reject or continue your existing conversation.
This feature requires suitable call capacity from your Voyced service.
Blind call transfer
A blind transfer sends the caller directly to another telephone number.
-
During an active call, select the Transfer function.
-
Enter the destination telephone number.
-
Confirm the transfer.
-
Twinkle sends the transfer request.
The connected SIP service must support the required transfer signalling.
Attended call transfer
An attended transfer lets you speak to the receiving person first.
-
Place the original caller on hold.
-
Use the second line to call the destination.
-
Speak to the receiving person.
-
Select the consultation or attended transfer option.
-
Complete the transfer.
The transfer succeeds when the connected systems support the required SIP methods.
Three-way conferencing
Twinkle supports a three-way conference using its two call appearances.
-
Start a call with the first person.
-
Place the call on hold.
-
Call the second person.
-
Establish the second call.
-
Use the conference function to join the conversations.
The number of external call legs depends on your Voyced service capacity.
Do Not Disturb
Twinkle provides a Do Not Disturb feature.
When enabled, incoming calls are handled according to its configured behaviour.
If incoming calls stop ringing unexpectedly, check whether Do Not Disturb is active.
Call redirection
Twinkle supports several SIP redirection options, including unconditional, busy and no-answer forwarding.
Your Voyced Hosted IPPBX also provides call routing and forwarding features.
For business call routing, use the forwarding settings appropriate to your Voyced service.
Avoid configuring conflicting forwarding rules in Twinkle and your Hosted IPPBX.
16. Contacts and call history
Twinkle includes a local address book and call history.
Add a contact
-
Open the address book.
-
Select the option to add a contact.
-
Enter the person's name.
-
Enter their telephone number or SIP address.
-
Save.
For international telephone numbers, use the Voyced 00 format.
Call a contact
-
Open the address book.
-
Select the person you want to call.
-
Choose the call action.
-
Confirm the outgoing Voyced account.
Review recent calls
Twinkle records information about incoming, outgoing and missed calls.
Open Call History to review previous calls and return a call.
The history is stored locally.
17. Troubleshooting
Twinkle does not register
Check these values:
| Setting | Required value |
|---|---|
| User Name | Your Voyced DID |
| Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| Authentication Name | Your Voyced DID |
| Authentication Password | Your Service Password |
| Realm | Empty |
| Register at Startup | Enabled |
| Transport | UDP |
| Outbound Proxy | Disabled |
Confirm your internet connection works.
If registration fails, reopen the profile editor and check your credentials.
Authentication failed
Check the SIP username and Service Password.
Your Service Password is different from your Hosted IPPBX website login password.
Twinkle may open an authentication dialogue after receiving a SIP authentication challenge.
Enter the correct Voyced credentials and try again.
Calls fail immediately
Check your registration status.
Confirm the destination number is correct.
For international calls, use the 00 prefix.
Check that you have sufficient call credit and the destination is permitted.
Incoming calls do not ring
Confirm:
-
Twinkle is running.
-
Your Voyced user profile is active.
-
SIP registration has succeeded.
-
Do Not Disturb is disabled.
-
Your speakers or ringing device are working.
-
Your Voyced call forwarding settings are correct.
If the same account is registered on several devices, test one device at a time to identify possible registration or routing conflicts.
No audio or one-way audio
Check your microphone and speaker selection.
Make sure both G.711 A-law and u-law are enabled.
Try a different internet connection.
Review the Transport/NAT settings, keeping the standard settings initially.
Poor audio quality
Check your internet connection.
Use a stable wired connection where possible.
Try another headset.
Avoid overloaded networks and background downloads while calling.
Telephone menus do not respond
Open Edit > User Profile > RTP Audio.
Check the DTMF transport setting.
Start with RFC 2833.
If a particular automated telephone system still fails, contact Voyced Support with an example call.
Voicemail does not work
Dial 1233 directly.
Make sure your Voyced SIP account is registered.
If voicemail speed dial fails but manual dialling succeeds, review the voicemail settings in your profile.
Wrong outbound Caller ID
Confirm which Voyced account is active.
Changing Your Name in Twinkle does not override the authorised outbound telephone number.
Contact Voyced Support if another number needs to be displayed.
Multiple SIP profiles cause problems
Check the credentials for each profile.
If you only need one account, temporarily deactivate the others.
Confirm that the remaining account registers and places calls.
Twinkle cannot find your audio device
Check your Linux sound settings.
Confirm your headset or microphone is connected.
Review the audio backend available in your Twinkle installation.
Restart Twinkle after connecting a new audio device if the application does not recognise it.
18. Diagnostic logs
Twinkle maintains log files in your Linux home directory.
The default location is:
~/.twinkle/
The main log files are:
-
twinkle.log -
twinkle.log.old
These logs help identify SIP registration and call signalling problems.
View recent log entries
Open Terminal and enter:
tail -n 100 ~/.twinkle/twinkle.log
This displays the latest 100 lines of the current log.
To review the previous log:
tail -n 100 ~/.twinkle/twinkle.log.old
If Voyced Support requests technical information, provide the relevant diagnostic details together with the date, time and destination of an affected call.
Review logs before sharing them, as they may contain account information and telephone numbers.
Do not share your Service Password.
19. Test your Voyced connection
Once Twinkle registers successfully, perform the following checks.
Outgoing calls
-
Confirm your Voyced user profile is registered.
-
Call another telephone number.
-
Check the call connects.
