Jami Softphone

Jami Softphone Setup with Voyced

Jami is a free, open-source communication application for macOS, Linux, Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad.

With Jami, you use your Voyced telephone number to make and receive calls using your computer, smartphone or tablet.

Jami supports standard SIP accounts, so you do not need to register for Jami's own communication service.

This guide explains how to install Jami, connect your Voyced account, configure your audio settings and make telephone calls.

1. What you need

Before starting, prepare:

  • A compatible Mac, Linux or Windows computer, or an Android or iOS device.

  • A working internet connection.

  • Your Voyced DID (telephone number or SIP account username).

  • Your Voyced Service Password.

  • A microphone and speakers, or a headset.

Windows Native desktop application
Android Google Play, F-Droid and other supported sources
iPhone and iPad Apple App Store

Jami is free to use, including for business purposes, and is released under an open-source licence.

Jami accounts versus SIP accounts

Jami supports different account types.

A Jami account connects you to Jami's own communication network for calls, messaging and other features.

A SIP account connects you to an external telephone provider, such as Voyced.

For your Voyced telephone number, select Configure SIP Account.

You do not need to create a Jami account or connect to a Jami Account Management Server (JAMS).

2. Find your Voyced account details

Before configuring Jami, locate your SIP credentials.

  1. Log in to your Voyced Hosted IPPBX.

  2. Open Cloud PBX / IP Centrex > Phone Lines.

  3. Find the telephone number you want to connect.

  4. Select the wrench icon beside the number.

  5. Copy the DID displayed for your account.

  6. Open My Profile > Settings to locate your Service Password.

Your DID serves as your SIP username.

Your Service Password is different from your Hosted IPPBX website login password.

You will need both details during setup.

3. Voyced SIP connection settings

Jami requires only a few settings for the initial connection.

Jami field Voyced setting
Username Your Voyced DID
Server sip.voyced.eu
Password Your Voyced Service Password

  3. Confirm Jami has access.

  4. Open Settings > Notifications > Jami.

  5. Enable the required notification options.

For reliable incoming calls, review the mobile limitations in the next section.

9. Receiving calls on mobile devices

Jami supports SIP calling on Android and iOS.

There is an important difference between using a SIP account and using Jami's own communication network.

Background calling

Mobile operating systems restrict background applications to conserve battery power.

When Jami is suspended, your SIP account may no longer receive incoming calls.

Jami supports push notifications for its own communication network.

For third-party SIP accounts, push-based incoming calling requires compatible SIP push handling, including support from the SIP provider.

The standard Voyced SIP settings alone do not establish this arrangement.

Android

For improved incoming-call availability:

  1. Open Android Settings.

  2. Find Apps > Jami.

  3. Allow notifications.

  4. Permit background activity where supported.

  5. Review battery optimisation settings.

  6. Open Jami and confirm your SIP account is registered.

If your Jami version offers a background-running option for SIP accounts, enable it and test.

Background operation and push notifications are different functions.

iPhone and iPad

iOS limits continuous background SIP registrations.

Allowing Jami notifications does not guarantee incoming Voyced calls when the application is suspended.

For this reason, test incoming calls thoroughly before relying on Jami as your main business telephone application.

Recommended tests

  1. Call your Voyced number while Jami is open.

  2. Answer and check audio.

  3. Move Jami into the background.

  4. Call again.

  5. Lock your device and repeat.

  6. Test over Wi-Fi.

  7. Repeat using mobile data.

If calls only arrive while Jami is open, the issue may relate to background registration rather than your SIP username or password.

For dependable mobile incoming calls, consider a softphone with a verified push service compatible with your Voyced account.

10. SIP server and network settings

Voyced supports several SIP connection methods.

Method Server Port
Preferred DNS NAPTR sip.voyced.eu 0
Alternative DNS SRV sip.voyced.eu 5060
Traditional SIP sip.voyced.eu 5060
Secondary server sipnl.voyced.eu 5060

Standard Jami configuration

For most users:

  • Server: sip.voyced.eu

  • Transport: UDP

  • SIP port: 5060

Jami does not provide a dedicated NAPTR mode selector in its normal account wizard.

The NAPTR port value of 0 is not the standard SIP listening port.

Advanced connectivity settings

Jami provides additional connection options under the SIP account's Advanced Settings > Connectivity.

For a standard Voyced installation:

Setting Recommended value
Automatic re-registration Enabled
Registration expiry Default
STUN Disabled
TURN Disabled
IP auto rewrite Default
TLS negotiation Disabled unless specifically configured
SIP proxy Empty

Keep registration timing and local network port settings at their defaults.

If your account fails to register, check the basic credentials before changing advanced networking options.

11. Configure audio codecs

Jami supports several audio codecs.

For normal Voyced telephone calls, these are relevant:

Codec Recommended use
G.711 A-law (PCMA) Standard telephone audio
G.711 u-law (PCMU) Standard telephone audio
G.722 HD voice where supported
G.726 Optional
Opus Optional on compatible connections

Voyced supports PCMA and PCMU for broad telephone compatibility.

Additional codecs depend on the complete calling route.

Change the codec settings

  1. Open Jami.

  2. Select your Voyced SIP account.

  3. Open Settings.

  4. Find Advanced Settings > Media.

  5. Open the audio codec settings.

  6. Enable G.711 A-law and G.711 u-law.

  7. Move these codecs towards the top of the preference list, where ordering is available.

  8. Save and test.

For initial setup, the default codec selection is suitable if calls connect successfully and audio works.

If you experience audio problems, test PCMA and PCMU before enabling additional codecs.

Media encryption

Jami supports encrypted media options, including SDES key exchange.

For a standard Voyced connection, use the media settings supported by your telephone service.

If SIP registration works but calls fail during media negotiation, check the account's encryption settings.

Where your connection uses ordinary RTP rather than SRTP, disable SDES key exchange and use RTP.

Do not enable TLS or other encryption options without the required provider configuration.

12. Making outgoing calls

Desktop

  1. Open Jami.

  2. Select your Voyced SIP account.

  3. Click the search field or telephone keypad.

  4. Enter the telephone number.

  5. Select the audio call button.

The current Jami interface includes a telephone keypad for SIP accounts.

Keyboard shortcuts

On supported desktop versions:

  • Ctrl + F: Search or enter a number.

  • Ctrl + Shift + C: Start an audio call.

  • Ctrl + D: End the call.

Available shortcuts vary with your operating system and Jami version.

Android and iOS

  1. Open Jami.

  2. Select your Voyced SIP account.

  3. Open the search or telephone keypad screen.

  4. Enter the telephone number.

  5. Select Audio Call.

Make sure the correct SIP account is selected if you have several accounts.

13. Making international calls

Voyced uses the same international dialling format across all connected devices.

Always dial:

00 + Country Code + Telephone Number

For example, to call Voyced in the United Kingdom:

00442035000202

The format stays the same regardless of your current location.

Contacts using a plus sign

Some contacts store international numbers beginning with +.

For example:

+442035000202

For Voyced, dial:

00442035000202

Jami does not provide a documented, standard account setting for automatically replacing a leading + with 00.

For the simplest setup, enter international numbers directly using the 00 format.

If you import contacts containing a plus sign, check the number before placing your call.

14. Receiving incoming calls

When someone calls your Voyced telephone number, Jami should display an incoming call while your SIP account is registered and reachable.

Answer a call

  1. Wait for the incoming call notification.

  2. Select Answer.

  3. Speak using your selected microphone and speakers.

Reject a call

Select Decline or Reject.

Missed calls

Jami includes conversation and call history information.

You may use this to review recent calls and return a call.

On mobile devices, incoming-call reliability depends on the background behaviour explained earlier.

15. Voicemail

Your Voyced voicemail access number is:

1233

Listen to voicemail

  1. Open Jami.

  2. Select your Voyced SIP account.

  3. Enter 1233.

  4. Start an audio call.

  5. Follow the spoken instructions.

You do not need a separate Jami account to access Voyced voicemail.

Using telephone keypad tones

Voicemail systems use DTMF keypad tones to recognise menu selections.

When connected to your voicemail, use the in-call keypad where available.

If the voicemail menu does not recognise your key presses, check the DTMF settings offered by your Jami version and contact Voyced Support if necessary.

Voicemail notifications

Jami's standard SIP documentation does not establish a dedicated Voyced voicemail indicator for every supported version.

Dialling 1233 is the reliable method for accessing your messages.

Jami's own audio messaging features are separate from your Voyced voicemail service.

16. Caller ID settings

Caller ID is the telephone number shown to the person receiving your call.

By default, Voyced sends the DID assigned to your SIP account.

Jami provides a local profile display name and picture.

These identify your account inside Jami. They do not override the authorised outgoing Caller ID supplied by Voyced.

Show a different telephone number

If you want outgoing calls to display another number, such as your company's main telephone number:

  1. Log in to your Voyced client area.

  2. Open a sales support ticket.

  3. Use the subject: Outbound Caller ID adjustment.

  4. Provide the Voyced DID you are calling from.

  5. Provide the number you want displayed.

Voyced will review the request.

When the requested number belongs to another provider, proof of ownership and additional verification are required.

Voyced Internal DIDs and extension numbers must not be used as public outbound Caller ID numbers.

17. Using multiple Voyced accounts

Jami supports multiple SIP accounts on desktop, Android and iOS.

For example, you might configure:

  • Your direct office number.

  • Your company's main number.

  • A second business number.

Add another account

  1. Open Jami.

  2. Select Add Another Account.

  3. Open Advanced Features.

  4. Choose Configure SIP Account.

  5. Enter the additional Voyced DID.

  6. Enter its Service Password.

  7. Set the server to sip.voyced.eu.

  8. Select UDP.

  9. Save.

Select the account for outgoing calls

Before dialling, choose the Voyced SIP account you want to use.

Each account uses its own credentials and authorised Caller ID configuration.

When using the same DID across several devices, incoming-call behaviour depends on how the telephone service handles simultaneous registrations.

Test each device separately before relying on a multi-device setup.

18. Additional calling features and limitations

Jami supports several calling functions, although not all apply to third-party SIP accounts.

Mute microphone

During a call, select the microphone control to mute your audio.

Select the same control to speak again.

Call hold

Jami includes SIP calling controls, but the available call-management features differ from those in dedicated business softphones.

Test any hold or resume controls offered by your version before relying on them.

SIP call transfers

Jami's current official feature list does not include SIP call transfer support.

This affects both blind and attended transfers.

If you regularly transfer customer calls to colleagues, consider another compatible softphone such as Blink, Groundwire or Zoiper.

Conferencing

Jami includes its own group calling and conferencing features.

These belong primarily to Jami's communication platform and should not be confused with conference calling through your Voyced SIP account.

For telephone conferencing, use the conferencing features available through your Voyced Hosted IPPBX where appropriate.

Messaging and file sharing

Jami includes messaging and file transfer through its own communication network.

These are separate from standard Voyced SIP telephone calling.

You do not need them to make or receive telephone calls using Voyced.

Multiple account types

You may use a Jami communication account and a Voyced SIP account within the same application.

Select the correct account before making telephone calls.

19. Troubleshooting

Jami does not register

Check:

Setting Required value
Username Your Voyced DID
Server sip.voyced.eu
Password Your Service Password
Transport UDP
SIP port 5060
Proxy Empty
Account enabled Yes

Confirm your internet connection works.

If necessary, disable and re-enable the SIP account to retry registration.

Authentication failed

Check your Voyced DID and Service Password.

Do not use your Hosted IPPBX website login password.

Re-enter your credentials and reconnect.

Calls fail immediately

Confirm the SIP account is registered.

Check the destination number.

International calls must start with 00.

Confirm sufficient call credit is available and the destination is permitted.

Incoming calls do not ring

Check that:

  • The Voyced SIP account is enabled.

  • Jami is running and registered.

  • Your internet connection is active.

  • Your device allows incoming-call notifications.

  • The DID is not forwarding all incoming calls elsewhere.

For mobile devices, test with Jami open first.

If calls fail only in the background, review Section 9.

No audio or one-way audio

Check your microphone and speaker settings.

Make sure microphone permission is enabled.

Try another internet connection.

Confirm PCMA and PCMU are available.

Check the media encryption settings if calls connect but audio negotiation fails.

Poor audio quality

Check your network connection.

Use reliable Wi-Fi or a wired connection where possible.

Try another headset or microphone.

Test using G.711 A-law and u-law codecs.

Calls disconnect unexpectedly

Check the stability of your internet connection.

Record the destination, call time and approximate duration.

Provide these details to Voyced Support.

Telephone menu tones do not work

Check the in-call keypad and available DTMF settings.

If you cannot navigate voicemail or another automated system, record the affected call details and contact Voyced Support.

Wrong Caller ID

Confirm you selected the intended Voyced SIP account.

Changing your Jami profile name does not change your public outbound number.

Contact Voyced Support for an authorised Caller ID adjustment.

Mobile calls stop after locking the device

This may result from background registration restrictions.

Review the mobile incoming-call information in Section 9.

Test using Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Do not rely on mobile background calling until your own tests confirm acceptable behaviour.

20. Diagnostic information

Jami includes technical logging options for investigating connection and call problems.

If Voyced Support requests diagnostic information:

  1. Open Jami Settings.

  2. Find the available logging or diagnostic option.

  3. Enable logging if supported by your version.

  4. Reproduce the problem.

  5. Collect the relevant details.

  6. Provide them to Voyced Support.

You may also supply the date, time, destination and approximate duration of a failed call.

Do not share your Service Password.

21. Test your Voyced connection

After registration, complete the following checks.

Outgoing calls

  1. Select your Voyced SIP account.

  2. Call another telephone number.

  3. Confirm the call connects.

  4. Check audio in both directions.

  5. Verify the outbound Caller ID.

Incoming calls

  1. Call your Voyced number from another telephone.

  2. Confirm Jami rings.

  3. Answer the call.

  4. Check both directions of audio.

International calls

Dial an international number beginning with 00.

Voicemail

Dial 1233 and confirm your voicemail service answers.

Desktop background operation

Leave Jami running while switching to another application.

Call your Voyced number again and confirm the incoming call arrives.

Mobile background operation

Repeat incoming-call tests while the device is locked and while Jami is in the background.

Check both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

22. Final setup checklist

Before using Jami for everyday telephone calls, confirm:

  • Your Voyced SIP account is enabled and registered.

  • Outgoing calls work.

  • Incoming calls ring.

  • Audio works in both directions.

  • Your Caller ID is correct.

  • Voicemail works through 1233.

  • International numbers use the 00 prefix.

  • Your microphone and speakers are configured.

  • Desktop incoming calls work while Jami is running.

  • Mobile background calling has been tested where applicable.

  • Any additional SIP accounts have been tested separately.

Jami is ready for use once the required calling tests succeed.

For organisations requiring frequent call transfers or dependable mobile background calling, another SIP softphone may be more suitable.
