Telephone (for macOS)

Telephone Softphone Setup with Voyced (macOS)

Telephone is a free SIP softphone for Apple computers.

With Telephone, you use your Voyced telephone number to make and receive calls directly from your Mac.

You do not need a separate desk telephone or an iPhone. Your calls use your Voyced account and internet connection.

This guide explains how to install Telephone, connect your Voyced number, configure your audio settings and start making calls.

1. What you need

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • An Apple Mac running a supported macOS version.

  • A stable internet connection.

  • Your Voyced DID (telephone number or SIP username).

  • Your Voyced Service Password.

  • A microphone and speakers, or a headset.

Telephone supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Download Telephone

Official website:

https://www.64characters.com/telephone/

Mac App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/app/telephone/id406825478

The current Mac App Store version is 1.6.

Telephone is available free of charge, with an optional Telephone Pro subscription.

The free version includes the main telephone functions, including multiple SIP accounts, call hold, transfer and call waiting.

Telephone Pro adds extended call history and support for up to 30 simultaneous calls.

The number of calls available through Voyced depends on your telephone service and its call capacity.

2. Find your Voyced account details

Before connecting Telephone, locate your Voyced SIP credentials.

  1. Log in to your Voyced Hosted IPPBX.

  2. Open Cloud PBX / IP Centrex > Phone Lines.

  3. Find the telephone number you want to use.

  4. Select the wrench icon beside the number.

  5. Copy the DID displayed for your account.

  6. Open My Profile > Settings and locate your Service Password.

Your Voyced DID serves as your SIP username.

Your Service Password is different from your Hosted IPPBX website login password.

Keep both details available during setup.

3. Install Telephone on your Mac

  1. Open the Mac App Store.

  2. Search for Telephone by 64 Characters.

  3. Select Get to install the application.

  4. Open Telephone from Applications or Launchpad.

  5. Allow microphone access when macOS requests permission.

When Telephone starts for the first time, the application normally opens the account configuration window.

If you already have Telephone installed, you can add your Voyced account through the application settings.

4. Configure your Voyced SIP account

Step 1. Open the account settings

  1. Open Telephone.

  2. From the macOS menu bar, select Telephone > Preferences (or Settings on supported versions).

  3. Open the Accounts tab.

  4. Click the + button to add a new account.

Step 2. Enter your SIP account details

Complete the account form using these settings:

Telephone field Voyced setting
Full Name Your name or company name
Domain sip.voyced.eu
User Name Your Voyced DID
Password Your Voyced Service Password

The Full Name field helps identify your account.

The Domain field identifies the Voyced SIP server.

Enter your Service Password exactly as provided.

Step 3. Check the network settings

Open the Network tab in the account configuration.

Use the following settings:

Setting Value
SIP Transport UDP
Connect using proxy Disabled
SIP server sip.voyced.eu
SIP port 5060
IP Version IPv4 or automatic, depending on your network

Leave other network options at their defaults.

Telephone supports UDP, TCP and TLS transport. For the standard Voyced connection, select UDP.

Step 4. Check the advanced settings

Open the Advanced tab if available.

Telephone normally completes the SIP Address automatically using your username and domain.

The resulting address should follow this structure:

sip:YOUR-DID@sip.voyced.eu

For example, the username is your Voyced DID and the domain is sip.voyced.eu.

Leave other advanced settings unchanged unless Voyced Support provides different instructions.

Step 5. Save your account

  1. Review the information.

  2. Select Done or close the account settings.

  3. Make sure the account is enabled.

  4. Allow Telephone to register.

When registration succeeds, the account status should show Available.

Your Voyced number is now connected.

5. Voyced SIP server settings

Voyced supports several SIP connection methods.

The standard connection information is:

Setting Value
Primary SIP server sip.voyced.eu
Standard port 5060
Transport UDP
Secondary SIP server sipnl.voyced.eu
Secondary port 5060

Voyced also supports DNS-based server discovery.

Where the software supports the required DNS options:

Method Host Port
DNS NAPTR sip.voyced.eu 0
DNS SRV sip.voyced.eu 5060
Traditional SIP sip.voyced.eu 5060

Telephone does not provide a separate NAPTR selection in its normal account setup.

For most installations, use the standard UDP configuration on port 5060.

If the primary server is unavailable and you need to test the alternative server, contact Voyced Support for assistance.

6. Configure your audio devices

Telephone uses your Mac's audio hardware.

You can use:

  • The built-in microphone and speakers.

  • A USB headset.

  • A compatible Bluetooth headset.

  • An external microphone and speakers.

Select your microphone and speakers

  1. Open Telephone > Preferences or Settings.

  2. Select Sound.

  3. Choose your preferred input device.

  4. Choose your preferred output device.

  5. Adjust the volume.

  6. Save the settings.

If the audio devices are not listed, check your Mac's System Settings > Sound.

Microphone permission

If the other person cannot hear you:

  1. Open macOS System Settings.

  2. Select Privacy & Security.

  3. Open Microphone.

  4. Allow Telephone to access your microphone.

A USB headset is a practical choice for regular business calls because it reduces echo and background noise.

7. Audio codecs

Telephone supports several audio codecs, including:

Codec Description
G.711 A-law (PCMA) Standard telephone audio
G.711 μ-law (PCMU) Standard telephone audio
G.722 HD voice where supported
Opus Higher-quality audio on compatible connections

Voyced supports these codecs on suitable routes and configurations.

For normal telephone calls, G.711 A-law and μ-law provide broad compatibility.

Adjust audio compatibility

Telephone includes an option called Use only G.711 codec.

To find this option:

  1. Open Telephone > Preferences or Settings.

  2. Select Sound.

  3. Find Use only G.711 codec.

  4. Enable the option if you experience codec compatibility problems.

  5. Save and test again.

For initial setup, leave the default codec configuration unchanged unless you experience a problem.

The codec chosen for a call depends on support from both ends.

8. Making telephone calls

Once your account shows Available, you can start calling.

Make an outbound call

  1. Open Telephone.

  2. Select your Voyced account.

  3. Enter the telephone number.

  4. Press Enter or select the call control.

  5. Wait for the other person to answer.

Your call is placed through your Voyced account.

Receive an incoming call

When somebody calls your Voyced number:

  1. Telephone displays an incoming call window.

  2. Select Answer to accept the call.

  3. Speak using your selected microphone and speakers.

  4. End the call when finished.

Telephone must remain running and registered to receive calls.

You may leave Telephone open while using other applications on your Mac.

9. Making international calls

Voyced uses the same international dialling format from every device.

Always dial:

00 + Country Code + Telephone Number

For example, to call Voyced in the United Kingdom:

00442035000202

This format applies regardless of your location.

Calling from macOS Contacts

Telephone supports integration with the macOS Contacts application.

If your contacts contain international numbers beginning with a plus sign, check the number before placing a call.

For Voyced, use the 00 format.

For example:

+442035000202

should be dialled as:

00442035000202

Telephone does not offer a documented automatic + to 00 conversion setting.

For the simplest setup, store the numbers you regularly call using Voyced's international dialling format.

10. Voicemail

Your Voyced voicemail access number is:

1233

Listen to voicemail

  1. Open Telephone.

  2. Select your registered Voyced account.

  3. Enter 1233.

  4. Start the call.

  5. Follow the spoken instructions.

You will reach the voicemail service for your Voyced account.

Using the keypad during voicemail

Telephone lets you send telephone keypad tones during an active call.

When the call window is active, press the required number on your Mac keyboard.

You can also press * and #.

These tones allow you to navigate voicemail menus and other automated telephone systems.

11. Caller ID settings

Caller ID is the telephone number shown to the person receiving your call.

By default, Voyced sends the DID assigned to your SIP account.

The Full Name field in Telephone identifies your account but does not automatically change your authorised outbound Caller ID number.

Display another telephone number

If you want outgoing calls to display another number, such as your company's main telephone number:

  1. Log in to your Voyced client area.

  2. Open a sales support ticket.

  3. Use the subject: Outbound Caller ID adjustment.

  4. Provide the Voyced DID you are calling from.

  5. Provide the number you want displayed.

When the number belongs to your existing Voyced account, the adjustment is normally straightforward.

Numbers outside your Voyced account require additional verification and proof of ownership.

Voyced Internal DIDs and extension numbers must not be used as public Caller ID numbers.

12. Using multiple Voyced accounts

Telephone supports multiple SIP accounts.

For example, you might have:

  • A direct business number.

  • Your company's main number.

  • Another number for international customers.

Add another account

  1. Open Telephone > Preferences or Settings.

  2. Select Accounts.

  3. Click +.

  4. Enter the second Voyced DID and Service Password.

  5. Use sip.voyced.eu as the domain.

  6. Save the account.

Repeat for further numbers.

Choose the outgoing account

Before placing a call, select the Voyced account you want to use.

Each registered account has its own SIP credentials.

Your outbound Caller ID follows the account's authorised Voyced configuration.

Telephone supports multiple accounts, but the number of simultaneous calls depends on your application version, subscription and Voyced service capacity.

13. Additional calling features

Telephone includes several useful functions for everyday business calls.

Put a call on hold

During an active call, press H in the call window.

The call is placed on hold.

Use the call controls to resume the conversation.

Mute your microphone

During an active call, press M.

This mutes your microphone.

Press M again to unmute.

Transfer a call

Telephone supports SIP call transfers.

During an active call, use the Transfer control in the call window, where available.

Enter or select the destination number and follow the displayed instructions.

Successful transfers depend on the connected SIP service and your Voyced account configuration.

Call waiting

Telephone supports call waiting when your account has sufficient call capacity.

If another call arrives while you are speaking, Telephone may display a second incoming call.

You can choose whether to answer the new call or continue your current conversation.

Available behaviour depends on your Voyced service and the call waiting preferences in Telephone.

Call history

Telephone maintains a history of recent calls.

The free version includes a limited call history.

Telephone Pro unlocks the full available call history.

macOS Contacts

Telephone integrates with macOS Contacts.

You can search for people and use stored telephone numbers to place calls.

Contacts autocomplete helps you find a number without entering the complete telephone number manually.

Remember to use Voyced's 00 format for international telephone numbers.

14. Using Telephone with other macOS applications

Telephone supports links beginning with:

  • tel:

  • sip:

This means supported applications and websites may offer telephone numbers that open directly in Telephone.

For example, a business website might display a clickable telephone number.

Make Telephone your default calling application

On supported macOS versions, review the calling application preferences.

You may be able to select Telephone as the default handler for telephone links.

The location of this setting depends on your macOS version.

When opening a link containing an international telephone number, check that the number follows Voyced's required 00 format before calling.

15. Troubleshooting

Account does not register

Check the following settings:

Setting Required value
Domain sip.voyced.eu
User Name Your Voyced DID
Password Your Service Password
SIP Transport UDP
SIP port 5060
Connect using proxy Disabled

Also check your internet connection.

A correctly registered account should show Available.

Authentication error

Check your Voyced DID and Service Password.

Do not use your Hosted IPPBX website login password.

Re-enter your credentials and reconnect.

Calls fail immediately

Confirm the account is registered.

Check the destination number.

International calls must begin with 00.

Also confirm you have sufficient call credit and the destination is permitted.

Incoming calls do not ring

Check that:

  • Telephone is running.

  • Your Voyced account shows Available.

  • Your Mac is awake and connected to the internet.

  • Notifications are permitted.

  • The correct Voyced account is enabled.

  • Call forwarding is not redirecting your incoming calls elsewhere.

If you use the same Voyced credentials on several devices, try testing with one device first.

No audio or one-way audio

Check your microphone and speakers.

Confirm microphone access in macOS System Settings.

Try another audio device.

If necessary, enable Use only G.711 codec in Telephone's Sound preferences.

Poor audio quality

Check the stability of your internet connection.

Try another headset.

A wired connection or reliable Wi-Fi network is preferable to an unstable connection.

Echo during calls

Use a headset.

If the other person hears their own voice, your speakers may be feeding sound back into your microphone.

Lower your speaker volume or switch to headphones.

Voicemail menu does not respond

Make sure the active call window is selected.

Use your keyboard to press the required numbers.

Telephone sends telephone keypad tones through the supported DTMF methods.

If the destination does not respond, contact Voyced Support.

Caller ID is incorrect

Check which Voyced account you selected before placing the call.

If you want to change the outbound number, contact Voyced Support.

Changing Full Name in Telephone will not override the authorised telephone number.

Calls stop after your Mac wakes from sleep

Check that Telephone reconnects after your Mac wakes.

If the account no longer shows Available, disable and re-enable the account or restart Telephone.

Test an incoming call after registration returns.

16. Diagnostic information for support

Telephone provides a SIP diagnostic log.

If Voyced Support requests diagnostic information:

  1. Open Telephone.

  2. Select Help.

  3. Choose Show Log File in Finder.

  4. Open the log file.

  5. Review the entries relating to the failed registration or call.

  6. Provide the requested information to Voyced Support.

The log file is overwritten when Telephone starts again, so collect the relevant information before restarting.

Check diagnostic information before sharing and do not disclose your Service Password.

17. Test your connection

Once Telephone shows Available, perform the following checks.

Outgoing calls

  1. Call another telephone number.

  2. Confirm the call connects.

  3. Check audio in both directions.

  4. Verify the outbound Caller ID.

Incoming calls

  1. Call your Voyced number from another telephone.

  2. Confirm Telephone rings.

  3. Answer the call.

  4. Check both directions of audio.

Voicemail

Dial 1233 and check that your voicemail service answers.

International calls

Dial an international number beginning with 00.

Background operation

Leave Telephone open and switch to another application.

Call your Voyced number again and confirm Telephone receives the call.

18. Final setup checklist

Before using Telephone for everyday calling, confirm:

  • Your Voyced account shows Available.

  • Outgoing calls work.

  • Incoming calls ring.

  • Audio works in both directions.

  • Your Caller ID is correct.

  • Voicemail works through 1233.

  • International numbers use 00.

  • Your microphone and speakers are configured.

  • Telephone receives calls while running in the background.

  • Any additional Voyced accounts have been tested separately.

Your Telephone softphone is ready for everyday use once these checks succeed.
