SIP Trunk Setup for E-MetroTel UCX
Use Voyced as an external SIP provider
This guide explains how to connect your Voyced telephone number and SIP trunk to an E-MetroTel UCX telephone system.
E-MetroTel UCX supports third-party SIP providers using standard SIP registration with a username, password and SIP server.
Once configured, your UCX system can make and receive business telephone calls through Voyced.
This manual covers E-MetroTel UCX systems that use the UCX Administration interface, including UCX appliances and supported virtual installations.
The instructions use the built-in IP Trunk Assistant. An alternative manual configuration is included for installations requiring additional SIP settings.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have:
-
Administrator access to your E-MetroTel UCX system
-
A working UCX installation
-
At least one configured extension and telephone
-
A working internet connection
-
Permission to manage SIP trunks and call routing
-
An active Voyced telephone number
Your Voyced SIP details:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP Server | sip.voyced.eu |
| SIP Username | Your-Voyced-DID |
| SIP Password | YourServicePassword |
| SIP Destination Port | 5060 |
| Transport | UDP |
| Authentication | Username and password |
Replace the example username and password with your actual Voyced service details.
Requirements Before You Begin
Your UCX system must have:
-
Correct IP address, subnet mask and default gateway settings
-
Working DNS resolution
-
Available simultaneous call capacity
-
A configured SIP signalling service
-
At least one working internal telephone extension
-
Suitable firewall and NAT settings
Recommended audio codecs:
-
G.711 A-law / PCMA

G.711 μ-law / PCMU
Voyced expects outgoing telephone numbers in full international format without a leading +.
Example:
442012345678
Calling Traffic
Voyced provides retail-quality telephone services intended for normal business conversations.
Automated bulk calling, predictive dialling and short-burst traffic are not permitted.
Normal incoming calls and individually initiated outbound business conversations are supported.
SIP Trunk Setup Steps
1. Log in to UCX Administration
-
Open your web browser.
-
Enter the administration address of your UCX system.
-
Log in using your administrator credentials.
-
Open the PBX menu.
-
Select IP Trunk Assistant.
The IP Trunk Assistant provides a simplified method for adding external SIP providers.
It supports predefined providers and custom SIP configurations.
For Voyced, use the custom provider option.
2. Create a New Voyced SIP Account
Under PBX → IP Trunk Assistant:
-
Click New Account.
-
Locate Account Settings.
-
Enter the following details.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Account Name | Voyced |
| Trunk Provider | Custom |
| User Name | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Secret | YourServicePassword |
| Outbound CallerID | Your-Voyced-DID |
The Account Name identifies the connection inside UCX.
Use a short name without spaces.
The User Name is your Voyced SIP account number.
The Secret is your Voyced SIP service password.
The Outbound CallerID should be a telephone number authorised for presentation on your Voyced account.
Do not select the predefined E-MetroTel Registration or E-MetroTel IP Auth provider profiles. These are intended for E-MetroTel's own SIP services.
3. Configure the SIP Server
In the Configuration Details section, locate:
Host / IP
Enter:
sip.voyced.eu:5060
The hostname identifies the Voyced SIP server.
Port 5060 is the standard SIP destination port for this connection.
UCX supports a hostname followed by a colon and port number in this field.
Use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Host / IP | sip.voyced.eu:5060 |
| Technology | SIP |
Keep the hostname rather than replacing it with a fixed numerical IP address.
4. Configure the SIP Trunk Parameters
Still under Configuration Details, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | peer |
| Qualify | yes |
| Insecure | port,invite |
| DTMF Mode | rfc2833 |
| Technology | SIP |
| Can Reinvite | no |
| Context | from-trunk |
| Disallow | all |
| Allow | alaw,ulaw |
These are the important settings for the connection.
Type
Select:
peer
This identifies Voyced as an external SIP provider.
Qualify
Select:
yes
UCX periodically sends SIP OPTIONS requests to check whether the provider is reachable.
Insecure
Enter:
port,invite
This allows incoming SIP INVITE requests from an identified provider peer without requiring each request to contain authentication credentials.
The PBX must still recognise the correct SIP peer.
Context
Enter:
from-trunk
This directs incoming calls into UCX's external-call routing system.
Do not use from-internal for a normal public SIP provider.
Audio Codecs
Set:
Disallow: all
Allow: alaw,ulaw
This enables the recommended G.711 codecs.
DTMF
Select:
rfc2833
This supports telephone keypad signalling for voicemail and IVR menus.
Can Reinvite
Select:
no
This keeps RTP audio routed through UCX during the initial connection.
5. Configure SIP Identity Settings
The IP Trunk Assistant also provides SIP identity settings.
For the initial configuration, use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| From User | Leave empty initially |
| From Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| Send RPID | Leave at default |
| Trust RPID | Leave at default |
The From User field can override the caller ID username in outgoing SIP messages.
Leaving it empty initially allows UCX to use its configured outbound caller ID.
The From Domain identifies the SIP domain:
sip.voyced.eu
If outgoing calls fail because the SIP From username must match your registered account, set From User to your Voyced SIP username and test again.
For normal caller ID presentation, start with the default Remote-Party-ID settings.
Only change these if testing shows that the receiving network requires a different SIP identity header.
6. Save the SIP Trunk
After reviewing the settings:
-
Confirm the server is
sip.voyced.eu:5060. -
Confirm your SIP username.
-
Confirm your service password.
-
Confirm Technology is SIP.
-
Confirm Context is
from-trunk. -
Confirm your codec settings.
-
Click Save.
UCX creates the corresponding SIP trunk automatically.
The new trunk is enabled immediately.
You do not need to open the main PBX Configuration page simply to activate a trunk created through the IP Trunk Assistant.
Your new connection should now appear in the account list.
7. Check the Created SIP Trunk
Navigate to:
PBX → PBX Configuration → Trunks
Find:
Voyced
Open the trunk and review the generated settings.
The configuration should contain your SIP server, username, password and registration information.
For a registration-based SIP provider, UCX must send SIP REGISTER requests.
Check that the trunk contains a valid registration configuration.
If the registration has not been generated correctly, use the manual SIP trunk method described in Steps 8 and 9.
If the IP Trunk Assistant has created the correct configuration, continue to Step 10.
8. Alternative: Create the SIP Trunk Manually
Some UCX installations require additional SIP settings that are not exposed by the IP Trunk Assistant.
In that case, create a SIP trunk directly.
Navigate to:
PBX → PBX Configuration → Trunks
Click:
Add SIP Trunk
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Trunk Name | Voyced |
| Outbound Caller ID | Your-Voyced-DID |
Under Outgoing Settings, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| PEER Name | voyced |
In PEER Details, enter:
type=peer
host=sip.voyced.eu
port=5060
username=Your-Voyced-DID
secret=YourServicePassword
fromdomain=sip.voyced.eu
context=from-trunk
qualify=yes
insecure=port,invite
canreinvite=no
dtmfmode=rfc2833
disallow=all
allow=alaw
allow=ulaw
Replace the username and password placeholders.
This configuration:
-
Identifies the Voyced SIP server.
-
Configures username/password authentication.
-
Enables G.711 A-law and μ-law.
-
Directs incoming calls to the inbound routing system.
-
Keeps RTP media routed through UCX.
Leave USER Context and USER Details empty unless your installation uses separate incoming and outgoing SIP peers.
Do not create two active trunks using the same Voyced credentials unless that is part of your intended configuration.
9. Configure Manual SIP Registration
Still on the manual SIP trunk configuration page, locate:
Registration → Register String
Enter:
Your-Voyced-DID:YourServicePassword@sip.voyced.eu/Your-Voyced-DID
Replace the placeholders with your actual SIP account details.
The registration string contains:
-
Your SIP username
-
Your SIP password
-
The Voyced SIP registrar
-
Your telephone number as the incoming Contact extension
Example structure:
username:password@registrar/DID
The DID suffix helps Asterisk identify incoming calls associated with the registered telephone number.
Under Incoming Settings, leave:
-
USER Context
-
USER Details
empty for this standard trunk configuration.
Click Submit Changes.
Then click Apply Config.
The manual SIP trunk is now ready for registration testing.
10. Verify SIP Registration
UCX uses Asterisk for SIP signalling.
For trunks using its traditional SIP driver, you can inspect registration from the Asterisk command-line interface.
Run:
asterisk -rx "sip show registry"
Look for the Voyced account.
Expected result:
Registered
You can also check the configured SIP peers:
asterisk -rx "sip show peers"
If your installation uses PJSIP rather than the traditional SIP driver, use:
asterisk -rx "pjsip show registrations"
Use the command matching the driver configured for your trunk.
A successful registration confirms UCX has authenticated with Voyced.
Incoming and outgoing call routing still need to be configured.
11. Create an Inbound Route
To receive incoming telephone calls through Voyced:
-
Navigate to PBX → PBX Configuration.
-
Select Inbound Routes.
-
Click Add Inbound Route.
-
Enter the route details.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Description | Voyced Incoming |
| DID Number | Your-Voyced-DID |
| CallerID Number | Leave empty |
| Set Destination | Your receiving extension |
For example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Description | Voyced Reception |
| DID Number | 442012345678 |
| Destination | Extension 100 |
The DID Number must match the telephone number delivered to UCX.
If the incoming SIP request contains a different format, adjust the DID to match the received value.
Click Submit Changes.
Then click Apply Config.
12. Configure an Inbound Ring Group
If several people should answer incoming calls to the same Voyced number, create a ring group.
Navigate to:
PBX → PBX Configuration → Ring Groups
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Ring-Group Number | An unused group number |
| Group Description | Voyced Reception |
| Extension List | Your reception extensions |
| Destination if no answer | Your preferred backup destination |
Example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Ring-Group Number | 600 |
| Group Description | Voyced Reception |
| Extension List | 100, 101, 102 |
Select the ringing method required by your organisation.
Click Submit Changes.
Return to:
Inbound Routes → Voyced Incoming
Change Set Destination to:
Ring Groups → Voyced Reception
Save and apply the changes.
Incoming calls will now follow the configured ring group.
13. Configure Additional Incoming Numbers
If several Voyced telephone numbers are delivered through the same SIP account, create an inbound route for each number.
Example:
| Telephone Number | Destination |
|---|---|
| Primary Voyced DID | Reception |
| Additional Voyced DID | Sales |
| Additional Voyced DID | Support |
To add another number:
-
Open Inbound Routes.
-
Click Add Inbound Route.
-
Enter the additional DID.
-
Select its destination.
-
Save.
-
Apply the configuration.
Each DID must match the called number received from Voyced.
When additional telephone numbers use the same SIP account, they can share the existing SIP registration.
14. Configure Incoming DID Identification
UCX normally identifies incoming numbers from the SIP Request-URI.
For this arrangement, the trunk context is:
from-trunk
If incoming calls reach UCX but the DID does not match, inspect the received SIP INVITE.
Some providers place the registered account number in the Request-URI and the actual called DID in the SIP To header.
If your incoming calls use that format, change the trunk context to:
from-pstn-toheader
This tells UCX to obtain the incoming DID from the To header.
For the initial setup, keep:
from-trunk
Only change it if the incoming SIP request confirms that the DID is carried in the To header.
Save any changes and repeat the inbound test.
15. Create an Outbound Route
To place external calls through Voyced:
-
Navigate to PBX → PBX Configuration.
-
Select Outbound Routes.
-
Click Add Route.
-
Enter the route details.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Route Name | Voyced Outbound |
| Route CID | Leave empty initially |
| Override Extension | Disabled |
| Route Password | Leave empty |
| Route Type | Normal |
Leaving Route CID empty allows the configured trunk or extension caller ID to be used.
You can enter an authorised number later if you want to use a specific caller ID for this route.
16. Configure Outbound Number Formatting
Scroll to:
Dial Patterns that will use this Route
VoipNow-style number rules do not apply here. UCX uses three separate dial pattern fields:
-
Prepend
-
Prefix
-
Match Pattern
For this example, users dial 9 before the full international telephone number.
Configure:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Prepend | Leave empty |
| Prefix | 9 |
| Match Pattern | Z. |
| CallerID | Leave empty |
The Prefix field matches and removes the outside-line access code.
The Match Pattern identifies the remaining number.
For example:
The user dials:
9442012345678
UCX removes the leading 9.
The number sent to Voyced is:
442012345678
This is the expected format.
The Z. pattern is a broad starting example. For production use, apply the destination restrictions required by your organisation.
If users already dial complete international numbers without an access prefix, configure a separate pattern with an empty Prefix field.
Do not add an unnecessary 00 or + to the number sent to Voyced.
17. Select the Voyced Trunk
On the same Outbound Route page, scroll to:
Trunk Sequence for Matched Routes
Select:
Voyced
as the first trunk.
Example:
| Priority | Trunk |
|---|---|
| 1 | Voyced |
If your organisation uses another provider as a backup, add that provider only if the intended routing arrangement requires it.
The trunk sequence determines which external connection UCX uses after an outbound route matches.
Click Submit Changes.
Then click Apply Config.
Your outbound route is now configured.
18. Configure Outbound Caller ID
UCX supports outbound caller ID at several levels:
-
Extension
-
Outbound route
-
SIP trunk
For the initial configuration, use your authorised Voyced telephone number.
Open:
PBX → PBX Configuration → Trunks
Select Voyced.
Under:
Outbound Caller ID
Enter:
Your-Voyced-DID
For example:
442012345678
You may also configure the caller ID under individual extension settings.
If you want a particular number to be used for every call on the route, open:
Outbound Routes → Voyced Outbound
Enter the authorised number under Route CID and enable the appropriate override setting.
Check the caller ID precedence before changing working extension-level settings.
Use only telephone numbers authorised for outbound presentation through Voyced.
19. Configure Calling Permissions
UCX can restrict which users may make outgoing calls.
Depending on your installation, these restrictions may use:
-
Extension permissions
-
Custom Contexts
-
Trunk Access restrictions
-
PIN Sets
-
Outbound route rules
If your organisation already has calling restrictions, confirm that the permitted extensions can use the Voyced route.
For example:
| Extension | Calling Permission |
|---|---|
| Reception | External calls allowed |
| Sales | External calls allowed |
| Meeting Room | Internal calls only |
If you use a PIN requirement for international calls, configure the appropriate PIN Set on the outbound route.
Keep existing emergency and special-service routes separate and correctly prioritised.
20. Configure SIP and NAT Settings
Navigate to:
PBX → PBX Configuration → SIP Settings
Review the settings under NAT Settings.
If your UCX system is behind a router performing NAT, configure:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| NAT | Yes |
| External IP | Your public IP address |
| Local Networks | Your internal network range |
UCX provides an Auto Configure function to detect and populate the external IP address and local networks.
Check the detected values before saving.
Example local network:
192.168.1.0/24
Use your actual network settings.
RTP Settings
UCX commonly uses this RTP range:
UDP 10000–13999
Confirm the actual configured range in your installation.
For an on-premises UCX behind NAT, E-MetroTel documents forwarding the configured RTP port range to the UCX server.
For a normal registration-based SIP trunk, a separate public SIP signalling port-forwarding rule is not normally required.
If your installation also uses IP-authenticated trunks or remote SIP phones, additional signalling access may be needed.
SIP Listening Ports
UCX commonly uses:
| Service | Default Local Port |
|---|---|
| Traditional SIP signalling | UDP 5060 |
| PJSIP signalling | UDP 5160 |
| RTP media | UDP 10000–13999 |
The local PJSIP port does not change Voyced's destination port.
The Voyced SIP server remains:
sip.voyced.eu:5060
Disable SIP ALG on your router or firewall if it is enabled.
Save any required changes.
21. Configure Jitter Buffer
If your UCX system uses an internet connection where audio packets occasionally arrive unevenly, the jitter buffer can help.
Navigate to:
PBX → PBX Configuration → SIP Settings
Locate:
Jitter Buffer Settings
For a system receiving SIP calls across the internet, you may enable the jitter buffer.
Start with the default jitter buffer parameters.
Do not increase jitter buffer sizes unnecessarily, as this may introduce additional audio delay.
If your audio quality is already stable, retain the existing settings.
Click Submit Changes, then Apply Config if changes were made.
22. Configure Simultaneous Calls
Your effective simultaneous calling capacity depends on your Voyced service and UCX resources.
For example:
| Setting | Example |
|---|---|
| Simultaneous Incoming Calls | 2 |
| Simultaneous Outgoing Calls | 2 |
These are examples only.
Use the limits included with your Voyced service.
If your installation needs a trunk-level call limit, configure it using the available trunk or account restrictions supported by your UCX release.
Do not confuse the number of internal extensions with the available simultaneous external calls.
Testing Your Setup
SIP Registration Test
-
Open UCX Administration.
-
Confirm the Voyced SIP trunk is enabled.
-
Check the registration status using the available SIP diagnostics.
For a traditional SIP trunk:
asterisk -rx "sip show registry"
Expected result:
Registered
If the registration fails, review the SIP username, password and registrar hostname.
Inbound Test
-
Call your Voyced telephone number from an external mobile telephone.
-
Confirm UCX receives the call.
-
Check that the correct inbound DID matches.
-
Verify the selected extension, ring group or IVR rings.
-
Answer the call.
-
Check audio in both directions.
For multiple Voyced numbers, test each number separately.
Outbound Test
-
Pick up a telephone registered to UCX.
-
Dial the external access prefix, if configured.
-
Enter the full international telephone number.
-
Confirm the call uses the Voyced trunk.
-
Verify the destination rings.
-
Check two-way audio.
-
Confirm the correct caller ID appears.
Example:
9442012345678
If 9 is your outside-line access code, UCX should send:
442012345678
to Voyced.
Troubleshooting
SIP Registration Fails
Check:
-
SIP server is
sip.voyced.eu. -
Username is
Your-Voyced-DID. -
Password is
YourServicePassword. -
The trunk is enabled.
-
The registration string is correct.
-
DNS resolution works.
-
UDP port 5060 is reachable.
If you created the trunk manually, confirm the Register String uses the correct username, password and hostname.
401 or 407 Error
These responses indicate SIP authentication is required.
An initial challenge is normal.
If registration repeatedly fails, check:
-
SIP username
-
Service password
-
Registration string
-
Authentication realm
-
Subsequent authenticated REGISTER requests
403 Error
Check:
-
Account status
-
SIP authentication
-
Outbound calling permissions
-
Caller ID authorisation
-
Any account restrictions
404 Error
Check:
-
Destination telephone number
-
Outbound dial pattern
-
Prefix removal
-
SIP Request-URI
-
Incoming DID matching
-
Which system returned the error
For example, if UCX sends the access prefix 9 as part of the destination number, the call may fail.
Correct number sent to Voyced:
442012345678
Incoming Calls Do Not Ring
Check:
-
SIP registration
-
Trunk context
-
Inbound DID Number
-
Incoming SIP number format
-
Destination configuration
-
Extension or ring group availability
If the called number is present in the SIP To header rather than the Request-URI, review whether the trunk needs:
from-pstn-toheader
instead of:
from-trunk
Only change this after inspecting the received SIP request.
Incoming Calls Reach the Wrong Destination
Check:
-
Inbound route order
-
DID matching
-
Catch-all inbound routes
-
Time conditions
-
Ring group destinations
A catch-all route may accept the call before it reaches the intended DID-specific route if the rules are not configured correctly.
Outbound Calls Fail
Check:
-
SIP registration
-
Outbound route
-
Dial pattern
-
Trunk sequence
-
Caller ID
-
Extension permissions
-
Available calling credit
-
Simultaneous call capacity
Outbound Calls Use Another Trunk
Open:
PBX → PBX Configuration → Outbound Routes
Check the route order and trunk sequence.
UCX compares the dialled number against available outbound routes.
A different route may match before the Voyced rule.
Review the dial patterns and route priority.
Outbound Number Has the Wrong Format
Check the three dial pattern fields:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Prepend | Adds digits |
| Prefix | Matches and removes digits |
| Match Pattern | Identifies the remaining number |
For the example using prefix 9:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Prepend | Empty |
| Prefix | 9 |
| Match Pattern | Z. |
Confirm that the final number contains only the country code and telephone number.
One-Way Audio
Check:
-
SIP Settings NAT configuration
-
External IP
-
Local Networks
-
RTP port forwarding
-
Firewall rules
-
Codec negotiation
-
SIP ALG
The default UCX RTP range is UDP 10000–13999.
Confirm the actual ports configured in your system.
Choppy or Distorted Audio
Check:
-
Internet connection quality
-
Packet loss
-
Jitter
-
RTP port handling
-
QoS settings
UCX marks voice traffic using DSCP values.
If your internet provider handles these markings incorrectly, review the QoS configuration.
Do not change codec settings before checking basic network quality.
Calls Disconnect After Approximately 30 Seconds
Check:
-
SIP acknowledgement delivery
-
NAT handling
-
Firewall timeouts
-
SIP signalling addresses
-
Session timers
SIP Trunk Appears Unavailable
If Qualify is enabled, UCX sends SIP OPTIONS requests to check reachability.
A provider may accept registrations and calls without responding to every OPTIONS request as expected.
Check registration and actual calling separately.
If calls work but the trunk is marked unavailable, inspect the OPTIONS responses before changing the connection.
Incorrect Caller ID
Check:
-
Trunk Outbound Caller ID
-
Route CID
-
Extension Outbound CID
-
Override Extension
-
SIP From and Remote-Party-ID headers
Use an authorised Voyced telephone number.
Registration Works but Calls Still Fail
Successful SIP registration confirms authentication.
It does not guarantee correct call routing.
Test these separately:
-
SIP registration
-
Incoming DID matching
-
Outbound route selection
-
Destination number formatting
-
Caller ID
-
RTP audio
Final Tips
-
Keep the SIP server set to
sip.voyced.eu. -
Use your Voyced telephone number as the SIP username.
-
Use your Voyced service password for authentication.
-
Select Custom in the IP Trunk Assistant.
-
Configure the connection for SIP registration.
-
Use UDP port 5060 for the SIP destination.
