SIP Trunk Setup for Sangoma Switchvox
Use Voyced as an external SIP provider
This guide explains how to connect your Voyced telephone number and SIP trunk to Sangoma Switchvox, allowing your business to make and receive telephone calls through Voyced.
Switchvox supports third-party SIP providers using standard registration with a username, password and SIP server.
This manual covers Switchvox 8, including version 8.4, and earlier Switchvox 6 and 7 installations. Menu names and configuration options are similar across these versions.
What You’ll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have:
-
Administrator access to your Sangoma Switchvox system
-
A working Switchvox installation
-
At least one configured extension and telephone
-
Permission to add or modify VoIP providers
-
An active Voyced telephone number
-
Your Voyced SIP details:
-
Account / telephone number:
Your-Voyced-DID -
Service password:
YourServicePassword -
SIP server:
sip.voyced.eu
-
Requirements Before You Begin
-
Your Voyced account must be active.
-
Your account must have sufficient calling credit and simultaneous call capacity.
-
Your Switchvox system must have a working internet connection.
-
SIP signalling uses UDP port
5060. -
Your firewall must permit the required SIP and RTP traffic.
-
Disable SIP ALG on your router or firewall.
-
Use full international telephone numbers without a leading
+when sending calls to Voyced. -
Recommended codecs:
-
PCMA / G.711 A-law
-
PCMU / G.711 μ-law
-
Switchvox provides its own SIP trunk management interface.
You do not need FreePBX or a separate SIP trunk module.
SIP Trunk Setup Steps
1. Log in to Switchvox
-
Open your Switchvox administration interface.
-
Log in using your administrator credentials.
-
Navigate to Setup → Call Routing → VOIP Providers.
-
Click Create SIP Provider.
On some older Switchvox versions, the menu appears as:
Setup → VOIP Providers
Both menus open the SIP provider configuration.
2. Create the Voyced SIP Provider
In the Provider Information tab, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP Provider Name | Voyced |
| Your Account ID | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Your Password | YourServicePassword |
| Hostname/IP Address | sip.voyced.eu |
| Callback Extension | Your reception extension |
| Default Fax Extension | Leave at default |
| DTMF Mode | RFC4733 |
Replace the placeholders with your actual Voyced account details.
The Callback Extension determines where incoming calls are sent when no more specific incoming call rule applies.
For example, if your receptionist uses extension 100, select:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Callback Extension | 100 |
You may also select an IVR menu, call queue or another configured destination.
RFC4733 provides standard DTMF signalling for telephone keypads and IVR systems.
Older Switchvox versions may display RFC2833 instead. Select this option when RFC4733 is unavailable.
3. Configure the SIP Provider Type
Open the Peer Settings tab.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Host Type | Provider |
| Apply Incoming Call Rules to Provider | Yes |
The Host Type setting is important.
Switchvox offers two choices:
-
Provider: Connects to an external SIP provider using registration.
-
Peer: Connects to another PBX or SIP peer.
For Voyced, select Provider.
This tells Switchvox to register with Voyced using the configured account credentials.
Set Apply Incoming Call Rules to Provider to Yes.
This allows incoming calls to follow your DID routing rules or the configured Callback Extension.
Do not select Peer for a normal registration-based Voyced connection.
4. Configure SIP Registration and Authentication
Open the Connection Settings tab.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP Port | 5060 |
| SIP Expiry | 120 seconds |
| Proxy Host | Leave empty |
| Authentication User | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Always Trust this Provider | Yes |
| Qualify Hosts | Yes |
| Use Local Address in From Header | No |
| SIP Transport | UDP |
The Authentication User must match your Voyced account number.
The SIP Expiry setting controls the registration interval.
Switchvox normally uses 120 seconds. Keep this default unless the SIP server requires another interval.
The Proxy Host field is not needed for the standard Voyced connection.
The Always Trust this Provider setting allows incoming SIP calls from recognised provider hosts without requiring authentication on each incoming INVITE.
Keep the default Yes setting for the initial configuration.
Switchvox must still recognise incoming SIP requests as belonging to the configured provider.
The Qualify Hosts option sends periodic SIP OPTIONS requests to check reachability.
If the SIP server does not respond to OPTIONS requests, disable Qualify Hosts after confirming registration and calling work correctly.
5. Configure Audio Codecs
Open the Call Settings tab.
Locate Audio Codecs.
Enable:
| Codec | Setting |
|---|---|
| ULAW / G.711 μ-law | Enabled |
| ALAW / G.711 A-law | Enabled |
| G.722 | Disabled |
| G.729 | Disabled unless required |
| Other Codecs | Disabled unless required |
The recommended codecs for Voyced are:
-
G.711 A-law
-
G.711 μ-law
Both provide standard telephone audio without additional codec licensing.
If your Switchvox version supports codec ordering, place A-law first.
6. Configure Media Handling
Still under Call Settings, locate the advanced call options.
Use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Allow Reinvite | Never |
| Enable Jitterbuffer | When Needed |
| Always Send Early Media | Leave at default |
Set Allow Reinvite to Never.
This keeps the audio path controlled by Switchvox and helps avoid one-way audio or unexpected call disconnections.
The Jitterbuffer setting helps when network conditions cause uneven audio packet delivery.
Start with When Needed.
If audio quality is already stable, the default jitterbuffer setting is also suitable.
Save your changes when finished.
7. Configure Outbound Caller ID
Open the Caller ID Settings tab.
For the initial connection, keep the default caller ID settings unless you need to specify a particular number.
Recommended settings:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Supports Changing Caller ID | No, initially |
| Caller-ID Method | From Header |
| Caller ID Name | Leave empty |
| Caller ID Number | Leave empty initially |
The From Header is the standard method for presenting caller ID to a SIP provider.
If you need to specify your Voyced number explicitly, and your account permits this, configure:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Supports Changing Caller ID | Yes |
| Caller-ID Method | From Header |
| Caller ID Number | Your-Voyced-DID |
Use a telephone number authorised for outbound presentation on your Voyced account.
For the first test, use your registered Voyced telephone number as the caller ID.
After confirming the correct caller ID appears, you may configure different authorised caller IDs for individual extensions.
8. Save and Activate the Provider
After completing the provider settings:
-
Review all entered details.
-
Click Save SIP Provider.
-
Select Go To Connection Status.
-
Locate the Voyced provider.
-
Check its registration status.
The expected status is:
Registered
Switchvox also displays additional connection information, including the provider hostname and response latency.
If the status shows Unreachable or Not Registered, check the authentication and connection settings before continuing.
You may return to this screen later through:
Server → Diagnostics → Connection Status
9. Configure an Inbound DID Route
Switchvox uses DID routes to direct incoming telephone calls.
Navigate to:
Setup → Call Routing → Incoming Calls
Select the DID Routes tab.
Click Create Single DID Route.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | Voyced Inbound |
| Incoming DID to Match | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Incoming Provider | Voyced |
| Incoming Call Type | Voice Calls |
| Extension to Route Call | Your reception extension |
Example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | Voyced Reception |
| Incoming DID to Match | 442012345678 |
| Incoming Provider | Voyced |
| Extension to Route Call | 100 |
Replace the telephone number and extension with your actual values.
Click Save Single DID Route.
The DID route must match the number received from Voyced.
If you have several Voyced telephone numbers, create additional DID routes for the different destinations.
10. Configure the Inbound Destination
Switchvox supports several destinations for incoming calls.
You may route your Voyced number to:
-
Individual extensions
-
Reception groups
-
Call queues
-
IVR menus
-
Voicemail
-
Other configured extensions
For example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| DID | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Destination | Reception |
| Extension | 100 |
For an IVR:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| DID | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Destination | IVR |
| Extension | Your IVR extension |
If you have only one Voyced number, the Callback Extension configured earlier may already provide the required inbound routing.
A separate DID route is useful when you need more control or use multiple telephone numbers.
11. Configure Outbound Calling
Navigate to:
Setup → Call Routing → Outgoing Calls
Select Outgoing Call Rules.
Click Create Outgoing Call Rule.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | Voyced Outbound |
| Note | International calls through Voyced |
| Number begins with the digits | 9 |
| Rest of number, minimum length | 8 |
| Rest of number, maximum length | 15 |
| Trim digits from the front | 1 |
| Prepend digits | Leave empty |
| Primary Call Through Provider | Voyced |
| Is this rule final? | Yes |
This example uses 9 as the external access prefix.
For example, a user dials:
9442012345678
Switchvox removes the first digit and sends:
442012345678
to Voyced.
The destination number must use international format without a leading +.
The length settings provide a general starting point for international calling. Adjust them to match the telephone number ranges your organisation needs.
Retain existing emergency and special-service call rules where required, with the appropriate routing priority.
Click Save Outgoing Call Rule.
12. Assign Outbound Calling Permissions
Switchvox controls outbound calling permissions per extension.
To allow an extension to use Voyced:
-
Navigate to Setup → Extensions → Manage.
-
Select the required extension.
-
Open Outgoing Call Rules.
-
Find
Voyced Outbound. -
Set the rule to Allow.
-
Save the extension.
A green check mark indicates the rule is permitted.
Repeat for other extensions needing access.
If all existing extensions should use Voyced, you may select Allow all existing extensions to use this rule when creating the outbound rule.
For security and cost control, restrict external calling to the extensions and destinations your organisation requires.
13. Configure Additional Number Formats
Some users may dial telephone numbers with a leading +.
Voyced expects the final number without this character.
You may create a separate outgoing rule to remove the leading +.
Navigate to:
Setup → Call Routing → Outgoing Calls
Create another rule.
Use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | Voyced Plus Prefix |
| Number begins with the digits | + |
| Rest of number, minimum length | 8 |
| Rest of number, maximum length | 15 |
| Trim digits from the front | 1 |
| Prepend digits | Leave empty |
| Primary Call Through Provider | Voyced |
| Is this rule final? | Yes |
For example:
+442012345678
becomes:
442012345678
This is particularly useful for callbacks from telephone directories or missed-call lists containing plus-prefixed numbers.
If users already dial international numbers without the +, this additional rule is optional.
14. Configure Inbound Number Matching
Switchvox normally identifies incoming calls using the SIP Request-URI.
If incoming calls reach Switchvox but do not match the correct DID, open:
Setup → Call Routing → VOIP Providers → Voyced
Select Caller ID Settings.
Locate:
Use the To header to route incoming calls instead of Request-URI
The options are:
| Setting | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| No | Uses the SIP Request-URI |
| Yes | Uses the SIP To header |
Start with the default No setting.
If incoming calls contain the correct Voyced DID in the To header rather than the Request-URI, select Yes.
Save the changes and repeat the inbound test.
This setting only needs adjustment when the incoming SIP request uses a different number format or header arrangement.
15. Configure Additional Provider Hosts
Some SIP providers use different signalling servers for registration and incoming calls.
Switchvox supports additional recognised provider hosts.
If your incoming calls arrive from a different SIP server than the one used for registration:
-
Open Setup → Call Routing → VOIP Providers.
-
Select Voyced.
-
Open Connection Settings.
-
Locate SIP Provider Host List.
-
Add the confirmed additional signalling hosts or IP addresses.
-
Save the configuration.
Use the actual source addresses for your incoming calls.
If inbound calls already work correctly, no additional host configuration is needed.
Keep the primary SIP server set to:
sip.voyced.eu
16. Configure Firewall and NAT
Your Switchvox system must communicate with Voyced over SIP and RTP.
Recommended network settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP Server | sip.voyced.eu |
| SIP Destination Port | UDP 5060 |
| SIP Registration | Enabled |
| RTP Port Range | UDP 10000–20000 |
| SIP ALG | Disabled |
If your Switchvox system is behind a router performing NAT:
-
Navigate to Server → Networking → IP Configuration.
-
Locate Allow NAT Port Forwarding.
-
Enable this setting.
-
Enter your external public IP address.
-
Save the configuration.
Switchvox provides a Look Up External IP function where supported.
If your firewall uses restrictive rules, allow the SIP signalling and RTP traffic required for this connection.
Avoid unrestricted inbound access where more specific firewall rules are possible.
Changing the network configuration may interrupt active calls, so schedule changes accordingly.
Testing Your Setup
Registration Test
-
Open your Switchvox administration interface.
-
Navigate to Server → Diagnostics → Connection Status.
-
Find the Voyced provider.
-
Check the registration status.
Expected result:

Inbound Test
-
Call your Voyced telephone number from an external mobile telephone.
-
Confirm Switchvox receives the call.
-
Check the correct DID route matches.
-
Verify the assigned extension, queue or IVR receives the call.
-
Answer the call.
-
Check audio in both directions.
If you have several Voyced telephone numbers, test each DID separately.
Outbound Test
-
Pick up a telephone registered to Switchvox.
-
Dial the external access prefix followed by the full international number.
-
Confirm the call routes through Voyced.
-
Verify the destination telephone rings.
-
Check audio in both directions.
-
Confirm the correct caller ID appears.
Example:
9442012345678
Switchvox should send:
442012345678
to Voyced.

Use this feature to identify which outgoing rule matches a dialled number.
Disable the diagnostic mode after testing.
You Are Not Permitted to Dial This Number
This normally indicates an outgoing call rule or permission issue.
Check:
-
The dialled number matches an outgoing rule.
-
The rule uses the Voyced provider.
-
The calling extension is permitted to use the rule.
-
The rule is in the correct priority order.
Open:
Setup → Extensions → Manage → Outgoing Call Rules
Confirm the required rule is marked Allow.

If Qualify Hosts is enabled, Switchvox sends SIP OPTIONS requests to test reachability.
A provider that does not respond to OPTIONS may appear unreachable even when registration or calling works.
In this situation, disable Qualify Hosts and verify the connection through actual registration and call tests.
Registration Works but Incoming Calls Fail
Check the Callback Extension and Incoming Call Rules first.
Then check whether incoming calls are identified as coming from the Voyced provider.
If Switchvox recognises the provider but not the DID, inspect the called number in the Request-URI and To header.
