SIP Trunk Setup for VitalPBX
Use Voyced as an external SIP provider
This guide explains how to connect your Voyced telephone number and SIP trunk to VitalPBX, allowing you to make and receive telephone calls through your existing Voyced account.
VitalPBX supports external SIP providers using standard SIP registration with a username, password and SIP server.
This manual covers VitalPBX 4 and 4.5, including the current PJSIP configuration. Differences for older VitalPBX 3 installations are included where relevant.
What You’ll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have:
-
Administrator access to your VitalPBX system
-
A working VitalPBX installation
-
At least one configured extension and telephone
-
An active Voyced telephone number
-
Your Voyced SIP details:
-
Account / telephone number:
Your-Voyced-DID -
Service password:
YourServicePassword -
SIP server:
sip.voyced.eu
-
Requirements Before You Begin
-
Your Voyced account must be active.
-
Your account must have sufficient calling credit and simultaneous call capacity.
-
Your VitalPBX server must have a working internet connection.
-
SIP signalling uses UDP port
5060. -
Your firewall must allow the required SIP and RTP traffic.
-
Disable SIP ALG on your router or firewall.
-
Use full international telephone number format without a leading
+. -
Recommended codecs:
-
PCMA / G.711 A-law
-
PCMU / G.711 μ-law
-
VitalPBX 4 and newer use PJSIP as the standard SIP technology.
Older VitalPBX 3 installations may also support the legacy chan_sip driver.
For new installations, use PJSIP.
SIP Trunk Setup Steps
1. Log in to VitalPBX
-
Open your VitalPBX administration interface.
-
Log in using your administrator credentials.
-
Navigate to PBX → Calls Routing → Trunks.
-
Click Add to create a new trunk.
On some older VitalPBX installations, the menu path is:
PBX → External → Trunks
Before proceeding, confirm your VitalPBX version.
For VitalPBX 4 and newer, select the PJSIP configuration described below.
2. Create the Voyced SIP Trunk
In the new trunk configuration, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Technology | PJSIP |
| Description | Voyced SIP Trunk |
| Profile | Default PJSIP Profile |
| Trunk CID Number | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Overwrite CID | If Not Provided |
| Simultaneous Calls | According to your Voyced subscription |
| Disable Trunk | No |
The Trunk CID Number identifies the telephone number used when an extension has no external caller ID configured.
If all outbound calls should present the same Voyced telephone number, select Yes under Overwrite CID.
Otherwise, If Not Provided allows extensions to use their own authorised outbound caller IDs.
Configure Audio Codecs
In the Codecs section, select:
-
alaw -
ulaw
Remove unnecessary codecs from the trunk's codec selection.
Leave the remaining general settings at their defaults unless your installation requires different values.
3. Configure the SIP Server
Scroll to General Configurations.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Local Username | voyced |
| Remote Host | sip.voyced.eu |
| Remote Port | 5060 |
| Contacts | sip:sip.voyced.eu:5060 |
| From User | Your-Voyced-DID |
| From Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
| Transport | UDP |
The Local Username identifies the trunk within VitalPBX. The actual Voyced authentication username is configured separately.
The Remote Host identifies the Voyced SIP server.
Use:
sip.voyced.eu
For the Contacts field, the SIP address is:
sip:sip.voyced.eu:5060
This SIP address is entered inside VitalPBX to identify the remote SIP endpoint.
Leave the Local Secret empty unless your configuration specifically requires authentication of incoming SIP requests.
4. Enter Voyced Authentication Details
Still under General Configurations, locate the remote authentication settings.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Remote Username | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Remote Secret | YourServicePassword |
| From User | Your-Voyced-DID |
| From Domain | sip.voyced.eu |
Replace the placeholders with your actual Voyced service details.
The Remote Username and Remote Secret are the credentials VitalPBX uses when registering with Voyced.
Use your full Voyced telephone number as the authentication username.
5. Enable SIP Registration
Scroll to Outbound Registration Settings.
Configure:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Require Registration | Yes |
| Registration Expiration | 3600 seconds |
| Registration Retry Interval | 60 seconds |
| Permanent Auth Rejection | Yes |
If your VitalPBX version does not expose all these fields, leave unavailable settings at their defaults.
With Require Registration enabled, VitalPBX sends SIP REGISTER requests to Voyced using the configured credentials.
The registration interval must be accepted by the SIP server. If the server requests a different interval, use the accepted value.
Keep the registration enabled for inbound and outbound calling.
6. Configure Inbound SIP Matching
Incoming SIP calls must be associated with the correct VitalPBX trunk.
Under General Configurations, locate:
-
Match
-
Identify By
For the initial configuration, use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Identify By | IP |
| Match | sip.voyced.eu |
The Match field identifies incoming SIP requests from the remote provider.
For installations supporting hostname matching, VitalPBX resolves the configured hostname to identify the source.
If incoming calls arrive from another authorised signalling address, this initial match might not recognise them.
In that case, inspect the source of the incoming SIP request and update the Match field with the confirmed signalling addresses.
Do not enter an arbitrary IP address or assume one DNS result represents every possible incoming SIP source.
Keep the main Remote Host set to sip.voyced.eu.
7. Configure Incoming Number Identification
In the Voyced trunk configuration, locate:
Get DID From
For the initial setup, select:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Get DID From | To |
| Get CID From | From |
These settings tell VitalPBX which SIP headers to examine for the called telephone number and caller ID.
The To header normally contains the dialled telephone number.
If incoming calls reach VitalPBX but fail to match the DID route, inspect the received SIP INVITE.
Depending on the incoming SIP format, another supported header may contain the correct DID.
Save the trunk and click Apply Changes.
8. Verify SIP Registration
After saving the trunk:
-
Navigate to Reports → PBX Reports → PJSIP Endpoints.
-
Select the Trunks tab.
-
Locate
Voyced SIP Trunk. -
Check the status indicator.
A green status indicator means the trunk is reachable or registered according to the displayed report.
For detailed registration information:
-
Open the Outbound Registrations tab.
-
Locate your Voyced registration.
-
Confirm the registration succeeded.
Expected registration status:
Registered
For additional diagnostics, open a terminal on your VitalPBX server.
Run:
asterisk -rx "pjsip show registrations"
You should see the Voyced registration.
To inspect the configured SIP endpoints:
asterisk -rx "pjsip show endpoints"
Successful registration confirms VitalPBX has authenticated with Voyced.
Inbound and outbound routing must still be configured.
9. Create an Inbound Route
To receive calls to your Voyced telephone number:
-
Navigate to PBX → Calls Routing → Inbound Routes.
-
Click Add.
-
Select Default as the Routing Method.
Enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Routing Method | Default |
| Description | Voyced Inbound |
| DID Pattern | Your-Voyced-DID |
| CID Pattern | Leave empty |
| Inbound Destination | Your extension, ring group or IVR |
Replace Your-Voyced-DID with the complete telephone number provided by Voyced.
For example:
442012345678
The DID Pattern must match the telephone number VitalPBX receives in the incoming SIP request.
Click Save, then Apply Changes.
10. Assign the Inbound Destination
VitalPBX supports several destinations for incoming calls.
You may route incoming calls to:
-
Individual extensions
-
Ring groups
-
IVR menus
-
Call queues
-
Voicemail
-
Other configured destinations
For example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Description | Voyced Reception |
| DID Pattern | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Inbound Destination | Extension 100 |
For several users, select a ring group instead.
Example:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Description | Voyced Sales |
| DID Pattern | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Inbound Destination | Sales Ring Group |
Make sure the selected destination exists and is active.
11. Create an Outbound Route
To place calls through Voyced:
-
Navigate to PBX → Calls Routing → Outbound Routes.
-
Click Add.
-
Enter a description.
-
Select your Voyced SIP trunk.
Use:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Description | Voyced Outbound |
| Trunk | Voyced SIP Trunk |
| Caller ID Number | Your-Voyced-DID |
| Overwrite CID | If Not Provided |
Next, configure the outbound dial patterns.
12. Configure Outbound Number Formatting
Voyced expects international telephone numbers with the country code and no leading +.
For example:
442012345678
VitalPBX supports four dial pattern components:
-
Prepend
-
Prefix
-
Pattern
-
CID Pattern
For a simple outbound configuration using 9 as the access prefix, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Prepend | Leave empty |
| Prefix | 9 |
| Pattern | Z. |
| CID Pattern | Leave empty |
With this configuration, the user dials:
9442012345678
VitalPBX removes the leading 9 and sends:
442012345678
to Voyced.
The Z. pattern matches numbers beginning with digits 1 to 9 followed by additional digits.
This is a general example. Configure more specific dial patterns if your organisation needs to restrict destinations.
Do not add a leading + to the number sent to Voyced.
Click Save, then Apply Changes.
13. Configure Outbound Calling Permissions
VitalPBX uses Class of Service settings to control which extensions may place external calls.
To verify outbound permissions:
-
Navigate to PBX → Class of Service → Class of Service.
-
Open the Class of Service assigned to your extensions.
-
Confirm the Voyced outbound route is available to those extensions.
-
Save any changes.
If an extension cannot place an outbound call despite successful SIP registration, check its Class of Service permissions.
You may also restrict international or premium-rate destinations using the available dialling rules.
14. Configure Firewall and NAT
VitalPBX must be able to communicate with:
sip.voyced.eu
Recommended settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP Server | sip.voyced.eu |
| SIP Port | UDP 5060 |
| SIP Registration | Enabled |
| SIP ALG | Disabled |
| RTP Ports | According to your VitalPBX configuration |
A common VitalPBX RTP range is UDP 10000–20000.
Confirm the actual configured range under the RTP settings.
If VitalPBX Is Behind NAT
Navigate to:
Settings → Technology Settings → PJSIP Settings
Under NAT Settings, configure:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| External Media Address | Your public IP address |
| External Signal Address | Your public IP address |
| Local Net | Your internal network range |
Example local network:
192.168.1.0/24
Replace the example with your actual network.
Your router or firewall must permit the required SIP and RTP traffic.
Click Save, then Apply Changes.
15. Older VitalPBX Versions
VitalPBX 4 and newer use PJSIP.
Older VitalPBX 3 installations may use either PJSIP or chan_sip.
If your installation supports PJSIP, use the main configuration described in this guide.
For older systems using chan_sip, the following settings provide a starting point.
Registration String
register => Your-Voyced-DID:YourServicePassword@sip.voyced.eu/Your-Voyced-DID
SIP Peer Settings
type=peer
host=sip.voyced.eu
port=5060
username=Your-Voyced-DID
fromuser=Your-Voyced-DID

qualify=yes
nat=force_rport,comedia
directmedia=no
dtmfmode=rfc2833
insecure=port,invite
transport=udp
disallow=all
allow=alaw
allow=ulaw
The exact fields depend on the older VitalPBX interface.
Use the equivalent options in the legacy trunk editor.
Where older Asterisk versions require different syntax:
| Older Setting | Newer Equivalent |
|---|---|
type=friend |
type=peer |
nat=yes |
nat=force_rport,comedia |
canreinvite=no |
directmedia=no |
dtmfmode=RFC2833 |
dtmfmode=rfc2833 |
For long-term compatibility and security, upgrading to a supported VitalPBX release is recommended.

Keep the SIP server set to
sip.voyced.eu. -
Use
Your-Voyced-DIDas the authentication username. -
Use
YourServicePasswordas the SIP password. -
Use PJSIP for modern VitalPBX installations.
-
Enable outbound SIP registration.
-
Use PCMA and PCMU for audio compatibility.
-
Use full international numbers without a leading
+. -
Configure the correct inbound DID route.
-
Assign the Voyced trunk to your outbound route.
-
Check Class of Service permissions for outbound calling.
-
Keep the firewall and NAT configuration consistent with your network.
-
Test registration, inbound and outbound calling separately.
VitalPBX supports external SIP trunks through standard PJSIP registration, making it suitable for connecting to Voyced using the normal username, password and SIP server method.
Once registration and call routing are configured correctly, you can use your Voyced telephone number for inbound and outbound business calls.
