VICIdial

SIP Trunk Setup for VICIdial

Use Voyced as an external SIP provider

This guide explains how to connect your Voyced telephone number and SIP trunk to VICIdial, allowing your agents to make and receive telephone calls through Voyced.

VICIdial supports external SIP providers using standard SIP registration with a username, password and SIP server.

This manual covers modern PJSIP installations and older systems using chan_sip.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Administrator access to your VICIdial system

  • A working VICIdial installation

  • At least one configured agent and telephone extension

  • Access to the Asterisk command-line interface for testing

  • An active Voyced telephone number

  • Your Voyced SIP details:

    • Account / telephone number: Your-Voyced-DID

    • Service password: YourServicePassword

    • SIP server: sip.voyced.eu

Requirements Before You Begin

  • Your Voyced account must be active.

  • Your account must have sufficient calling credit and simultaneous call capacity.

  • Your VICIdial server must have internet access.

  • SIP signalling normally uses UDP port 5060.

  • Your firewall must allow the required SIP and RTP traffic.

  • Disable SIP ALG on your router or firewall.

  • Use full international telephone number format without a leading +.

  • Recommended codecs:

    • PCMA / G.711 A-law

    • PCMU / G.711 μ-law

Important: Permitted Calling Traffic

Voyced provides retail-quality voice services intended for normal telephone conversations.

VICIdial includes automatic dialling features, but Voyced does not permit short-burst or auto-dialler traffic.

Supported calling activities:

  • Inbound customer service calls

  • Incoming sales enquiries

  • Normal business telephone conversations

  • Individually initiated outbound calls

  • Manual, agent-led customer conversations

Not supported:

  • Predictive dialling

  • Power dialling

  • Automated bulk calling

  • Short-burst calling campaigns

  • High-volume automated call attempts

Configure VICIdial for manual outbound calling and normal conversational traffic.

SIP Trunk Setup Steps

1. Log in to VICIdial

  1. Open your VICIdial administration interface.

  2. Log in using your administrator credentials.

  3. Navigate to Admin → Carriers.

  4. Click Add A New Carrier.

Before continuing, confirm which SIP driver your Asterisk installation uses.

VICIdial supports:

  • PJSIP: The current Asterisk SIP driver.

  • chan_sip: The older SIP driver, found in many existing installations.

ViciBox 12 and older installations commonly use chan_sip on UDP 5060. Newer ViciBox 13 installations use PJSIP on UDP 5060 by default.

Asterisk 21 and newer no longer include chan_sip.

Use the configuration matching your installed SIP driver.

2. Create the Voyced SIP Carrier

In Admin → Carriers → Add A New Carrier, enter:

Field Value
Carrier ID VOYCED
Carrier Name Voyced SIP Trunk
Carrier Description Voyced Business SIP
Admin User Group All Admin User Groups
Template ID NONE
Protocol PJSIP or SIP
Server IP Your VICIdial telephony server

Select:

  • PJSIP for a PJSIP installation.

  • SIP for an older chan_sip installation.

If you use multiple Asterisk servers, select the server responsible for the Voyced connection.

The following steps explain both configuration methods.

3. Configure the PJSIP Trunk

For modern PJSIP installations, leave the Registration String field empty.

PJSIP registration details belong in the Account Entry field.

Paste the following configuration:

[voyced-auth]
type=auth
auth_type=userpass
username=Your-Voyced-DID
password=YourServicePassword

[voyced-registration]
type=registration
server_uri=sip:sip.voyced.eu:5060
client_uri=sip:Your-Voyced-DID@sip.voyced.eu
outbound_auth=voyced-auth
contact_user=Your-Voyced-DID
retry_interval=60
expiration=3600
line=yes
endpoint=voyced

[voyced-aor]
type=aor
contact=sip:sip.voyced.eu:5060
qualify_frequency=60

[voyced]
type=endpoint
context=trunkinbound
disallow=all
allow=alaw,ulaw
aors=voyced-aor
outbound_auth=voyced-auth
from_user=Your-Voyced-DID
from_domain=sip.voyced.eu
direct_media=no
dtmf_mode=rfc4733
force_rport=yes
rtp_symmetric=yes
rewrite_contact=yes

Replace the example username and password with your actual Voyced details.

This configuration:

  • Registers VICIdial with Voyced.

  • Uses SIP authentication.

  • Enables G.711 A-law and μ-law.

  • Routes inbound calls towards the VICIdial inbound dialplan.

  • Keeps RTP media routed through Asterisk.

  • Supports standard DTMF signalling.

The line=yes setting helps Asterisk identify inbound calls associated with the registration.

For this to work, the incoming SIP request must contain the registration identifier returned by the provider.

If the identifier is not returned, inbound endpoint matching needs an additional configuration. This is covered under Troubleshooting.

4. Configure the PJSIP Outbound Dialplan

In the Dialplan Entry field, enter:

exten => _9[1-9]X.,1,AGI(agi://127.0.0.1:4577/call_log)
exten => _9[1-9]X.,n,Dial(PJSIP/${EXTEN:1}@voyced,60)
exten => _9[1-9]X.,n,Hangup()

This example uses 9 as VICIdial's outbound routing prefix.

For example, VICIdial routes:

9442012345678

and sends the following number to Voyced:

442012345678

The leading 9 is removed before the call reaches Voyced.

The example dialplan matches international numbers using a simple digit pattern. Configure any additional destination restrictions required by your business.

The campaign dial prefix must match the prefix used here.

5. Alternative: Older chan_sip Configuration

If your VICIdial installation uses chan_sip, use this configuration instead of Steps 3 and 4.

Under Admin → Carriers, select:

Field Value
Carrier ID VOYCED
Carrier Name Voyced SIP Trunk
Protocol SIP
Template ID NONE

In the Registration String field, enter:

register => Your-Voyced-DID:YourServicePassword@sip.voyced.eu/Your-Voyced-DID

In Account Entry, enter:

[voyced]
type=peer
host=sip.voyced.eu
port=5060
username=Your-Voyced-DID
fromuser=Your-Voyced-DID
fromdomain=sip.voyced.eu
secret=YourServicePassword
context=trunkinbound
qualify=yes
nat=force_rport,comedia
directmedia=no
dtmfmode=rfc2833
insecure=port,invite
transport=udp
disallow=all
allow=alaw
allow=ulaw

The insecure=port,invite setting permits incoming calls from an identified SIP carrier peer without requiring authentication on each incoming INVITE.

Asterisk must still identify the correct carrier peer.

In Dialplan Entry, enter:

exten => _9[1-9]X.,1,AGI(agi://127.0.0.1:4577/call_log)
exten => _9[1-9]X.,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN:1}@voyced,60)
exten => _9[1-9]X.,n,Hangup()

Older Asterisk Settings

Some older installations use slightly different configuration parameters.

Older Setting Newer Equivalent
type=friend type=peer
nat=yes nat=force_rport,comedia
canreinvite=no directmedia=no
dtmfmode=RFC2833 dtmfmode=rfc2833

Retain older syntax only when required by your installed Asterisk version.

Use either PJSIP or chan_sip for your Voyced connection. Avoid creating competing registrations for the same account.

6. Save and Activate the SIP Carrier

Once you have entered the configuration:

  1. Click Submit.

  2. Return to Admin → Carriers.

  3. Open the Voyced carrier.

  4. Set Active to Y.

  5. Confirm the correct server is selected.

  6. Save the configuration.

VICIdial generates the corresponding Asterisk configuration from the carrier settings.

Allow the configuration to apply before testing.

7. Verify SIP Registration

Open the Asterisk CLI on your VICIdial server.

For PJSIP:

asterisk -rx "pjsip show registrations"

For chan_sip:

asterisk -rx "sip show registry"

Look for the Voyced registration.

The expected status is:

Registered

For PJSIP, you may also inspect the endpoint:

asterisk -rx "pjsip show endpoint voyced"

For chan_sip:

asterisk -rx "sip show peers"

Successful registration confirms Asterisk has authenticated with Voyced.

Inbound and outbound routing must still be configured.

8. Create an Inbound Group

To receive incoming calls through VICIdial:

  1. Navigate to Inbound → In-Groups.

  2. Click Add A New In-Group.

  3. Enter the group details.

Example:

Field Value
Group ID VOYCEDIN
Group Name Voyced Reception
Active Y
Next Agent Call Longest Wait Time

Click Submit.

The inbound group determines which available agents receive incoming calls.

You may also direct calls to IVR menus or other supported destinations.

9. Configure the Inbound DID

Navigate to:

Inbound → DIDs → Add A New DID

Enter:

Field Value
DID Extension / DID Pattern Your-Voyced-DID
DID Description Voyced Incoming
DID Route IN_GROUP
In-Group ID VOYCEDIN
Active Y

Replace Your-Voyced-DID with your actual telephone number.

For example:

442012345678

The configured DID must match the called number delivered to VICIdial.

VICIdial commonly uses the trunkinbound dialplan context to pass incoming calls to its DID routing application.

Confirm this context exists with:

asterisk -rx "dialplan show trunkinbound"

The context should include a DID routing entry similar to:

exten => _X.,1,AGI(agi-DID_route.agi)

If your system uses another inbound context, ensure the carrier configuration points to the correct context.

Save the DID configuration.

10. Assign Agents to the Inbound Group

  1. Open Inbound → In-Groups.

  2. Select VOYCEDIN.

  3. Confirm the group is active.

  4. Open the campaign settings for agents who should receive inbound calls.

  5. Locate Allowed Inbound Groups.

  6. Include VOYCEDIN.

  7. Save the configuration.

Agents must be logged in and available to receive calls.

The campaign must also permit inbound call handling.

11. Configure Manual Outbound Calling

Voyced supports normal retail and conversational calling.

Configure VICIdial for manually initiated outbound conversations.

  1. Navigate to Campaigns.

  2. Select your campaign.

  3. Open the campaign's detailed settings.

  4. Locate Dial Method.

  5. Select MANUAL.

  6. Confirm Auto Dial Level is 0.

  7. Set Dial Prefix to 9.

  8. Leave Manual Dial Prefix empty unless you need a separate manual routing prefix.

  9. Save the campaign.

Example:

Field Value
Campaign Name Voyced Manual Calling
Dial Method MANUAL
Auto Dial Level 0
Dial Prefix 9
Outbound Caller ID Your-Voyced-DID

In MANUAL mode, agents initiate outbound calls individually.

VICIdial does not automatically dial ahead of available agents.

Agents Handling Both Inbound and Outbound Calls

If the same agents must receive inbound calls between manually initiated outbound calls, use the INBOUND_MAN dial method.

For this mode:

Field Value
Dial Method INBOUND_MAN
Auto Dial Level 1.0
Dial Prefix 9
Allowed Inbound Groups VOYCEDIN

The 1.0 dial level is required for inbound call handling in this mode.

INBOUND_MAN does not enable predictive outbound dialling. Agents continue to initiate outbound calls manually.

Do not use predictive, ratio or adaptive dial methods with Voyced.

12. Configure Outbound Caller ID

VICIdial allows caller ID settings at campaign and user level.

For campaign settings:

  1. Open Campaigns.

  2. Select your Voyced campaign.

  3. Open its detailed settings.

  4. Locate Campaign CallerID.

  5. Enter your authorised Voyced telephone number.

Example:

Your-Voyced-DID

For individual user settings:

  1. Navigate to Users.

  2. Select the required user.

  3. Open the user settings.

  4. Locate Outbound CallerID.

  5. Enter the authorised telephone number.

  6. Save.

Use a valid caller ID authorised for use with your Voyced service.

13. Configure Firewall and NAT

Your VICIdial server must reach:

sip.voyced.eu

Recommended settings:

Setting Value
SIP Server sip.voyced.eu
SIP Port UDP 5060
SIP Registration Enabled
SIP ALG Disabled
RTP Port Range According to your Asterisk configuration

A common Asterisk RTP range is UDP 10000–20000.

Check your actual RTP configuration rather than assuming this range applies to every installation.

If your server is behind NAT, confirm Asterisk uses the correct external signalling and media addresses.

Also ensure the firewall permits the SIP and RTP traffic required for incoming and outgoing calls.

Testing Your Setup

Registration Test

For PJSIP:

asterisk -rx "pjsip show registrations"

For chan_sip:

asterisk -rx "sip show registry"

Confirm your Voyced account shows as registered.

Inbound Test

  1. Call your Voyced telephone number from an external mobile telephone.

  2. Confirm VICIdial receives the call.

  3. Check the DID route matches your number.

  4. Confirm the call enters the Voyced inbound group.

  5. Verify an available agent receives the call.

  6. Answer and check two-way audio.

Outbound Test

  1. Log in to VICIdial as an agent.

  2. Select your manual outbound campaign.

  3. Enter a valid destination number.

  4. Initiate the call manually.

  5. Confirm the destination rings.

  6. Check two-way audio.

  7. Verify the correct caller ID appears.

Example destination number:

442012345678

The number sent to Voyced must use full international format without a leading +.

Troubleshooting

SIP Registration Fails

Check:

  • SIP server is sip.voyced.eu

  • Username is Your-Voyced-DID

  • Password is YourServicePassword

  • Registration is enabled

  • Transport is UDP

  • Destination port is 5060

  • The correct SIP driver is configured

For PJSIP, check the registration and endpoint configuration.

For chan_sip, check the registration string and peer settings.

401 or 407 Error

These responses indicate an authentication challenge.

An initial challenge is normal.

If authentication repeatedly fails, check:

  • SIP username

  • Service password

  • Authentication realm

  • Subsequent authenticated SIP requests

403 Error

Check:

  • Account status

  • Authentication details

  • Outbound calling permissions

  • Caller ID authorisation

  • Any account restrictions

404 Error

Check:

  • Destination number format

  • Dialplan matching

  • Prefix removal

  • SIP Request-URI

  • DID matching

  • Which system returned the response

For example, if VICIdial uses prefix 9, the following number must not be sent to Voyced:

9442012345678

The number sent to Voyced should be:

442012345678

Inbound Calls Do Not Reach Agents

Check:

  • SIP registration

  • Inbound SIP endpoint identification

  • trunkinbound context

  • DID Extension

  • In-Group ID

  • Campaign inbound permissions

  • Agent availability

For PJSIP installations, the incoming SIP request must match the correct endpoint.

The line=yes setting helps when the provider preserves the registration identifier in incoming calls.

If the identifier is absent, an additional PJSIP endpoint identification rule may be necessary.

This rule must match the actual SIP signalling source used for incoming Voyced calls.

Avoid configuring a single guessed address, as SIP signalling may originate from different servers.

Outbound Calls Fail

Check:

  • Campaign Dial Method

  • Dial Prefix

  • Active carrier

  • Dialplan matching

  • Caller ID

  • SIP registration

  • Account credit

  • Simultaneous call capacity

One-Way Audio

Check:

  • RTP port configuration

  • Firewall rules

  • NAT settings

  • SDP media addresses

  • Codec negotiation

  • SIP ALG

Calls Fail After Switching SIP Drivers

Check:

  • The selected SIP driver is running.

  • The correct local SIP port is configured.

  • The carrier Protocol matches the driver.

  • The outbound dialplan uses PJSIP/ or SIP/ correctly.

  • The previous SIP registration is no longer competing with the new configuration.

Outbound Traffic Is Restricted

Confirm your VICIdial campaign uses normal conversational traffic.

Voyced does not permit:

  • Predictive dialling

  • Power dialling

  • Automated bulk calling

  • Short-burst calling campaigns

Use manual, agent-initiated calling and ensure your traffic complies with the Voyced service conditions.

Final Tips

  • Always use your Voyced SIP account credentials.

  • Keep the SIP server set to sip.voyced.eu.

  • Use Your-Voyced-DID as the SIP username.

  • Use YourServicePassword as the SIP password.

  • Use PJSIP for modern Asterisk installations.

  • Retain chan_sip only where supported by your installation.

  • Configure VICIdial for manual, agent-led calling.

  • Do not use predictive, power or bulk automatic dialling.

  • Avoid short-burst calling patterns.

  • Use full international telephone numbers without a leading +.

  • Confirm DID routing and agent permissions for inbound calls.

  • Test registration, inbound and outbound calling separately.

VICIdial supports external SIP trunks through PJSIP and legacy chan_sip, making it suitable for connecting to Voyced.

For reliable operation, use the configuration matching your Asterisk installation and keep all outbound activity within Voyced's permitted retail and conversational calling conditions.
