What Is Caller ID (Number ID) and Why Can’t You Change It Yourself?

TL;DR

Caller ID shows the phone number (and sometimes name) of the person or business calling you. At Voyced, we don’t let users change their Caller ID themselves. This helps stop fraud and spam, and also keeps us and you within the law. If you run your own IPPBX and want to send your own Caller ID, it’s possible, but we’ll need extra documents and a signed agreement.
If you want to use another number you already have with Voyced as your Caller ID, just ask us via a support ticket.

What is Caller ID?

Caller ID (also called Number ID) is the number shown when you make a phone call. It helps the person receiving the call know who is trying to reach them. Some systems also show the name linked to the number.

It’s a helpful tool when used honestly. But when abused, it causes real problems.

Why Is Caller ID Controlled?

Scammers often fake their Caller ID to hide their identity or trick people. They might:

  • Pretend to be a local number

  • Impersonate a trusted company

  • Use rotating fake numbers to avoid detection

This is called Caller ID spoofing.

To fight this, laws have been introduced in many countries, especially in Europe. These laws often require the Caller ID to be valid, correct, and owned by the caller. Breaking these rules can lead to fines or loss of service.

Why You Can’t Change It Yourself

Because of the abuse and legal risks, Voyced does not allow users to change their Caller ID on their own.

Allowing free changes would make it easy for people to misuse the system. It would also put you and us at legal risk.

To protect both sides:

  • We verify all numbers before they can be used as Caller ID

  • We only allow safe and legal Caller ID setups

Want to Use a Different Number You Have With Us?

If you have more than one number with Voyced and want to show one of those as the Caller ID on a specific account or service, we can help.

Just open a support ticket and tell us:

  • Which number you want to display

  • Which service or account it should apply to

We’ll check that the number is yours and set it up safely for you.

What If You Use Your Own IPPBX?

If you run your own phone system (IPPBX), it’s possible to send your own Caller ID along with your calls.

In that case:

  • We pass the Caller ID through without changing it

  • You must fill in extra paperwork

  • You must sign that you take full legal and financial responsibility

  • In some cases, we may also require a security deposit

This protects us and ensures you're not sending calls with incorrect or fake Caller IDs.

What Are the Risks of Abuse?

If you use an incorrect or fake Caller ID:

  • You may face fines or penalties

  • Your calls may get blocked by phone networks

  • Your service may be suspended without warning

  • You may be held legally responsible

We take this seriously to keep our services clean and trusted.

Stay Safe, Stay Legal

Using the correct Caller ID helps build trust and keeps your calls from being flagged as spam.

If you’re not sure about what Caller ID you’re allowed to use, or if you’d like to apply for IPPBX passthrough, or link another one of your numbers to an account, just contact our team.
